Well Ryan I tried to tail grab a baby skunk today. But I failed I just couldn't bring myself to get that close to the little guy. Once he sprayed me from about 8' I said [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] no today is not the day to tail grab and plus I didn't have a film crew! Hahaha never a dull day

TJP and Pesky you two belong to a very special group that frankly I have no plans on joining. We don't have too many skunks here but if we did I would welcome both of you to come down so I can watch.

You can also try sticking your head in a Alligator's mouths. I am told that is fun too. lol

I grabbed a couple of little ones at the beginning of the month. I had momma in a Safeguard, two young ones in a colony trap and two hugging the outside of the trap.

One of them farted a little but none of them sprayed.

Customer was very impressed.

I must admit my nerves were rather shot. I can't picture a situation where I grab an adult but who knows, the time might come.

The soap/peroxide/baking soda is money in the bank, must be used freshly mixed and will have the best effect.

I remember the poor bird dogs back on the farm when I was a kid, they looked like tomato soup after a skunk encounter
as they were doused in it!

Caught 6 juveniles downtown yesterday between a truck dealership and a hotel right on the interstate, they were out in
mid day, gnawing on anything they could to suck water off of it, no tracks in the mud from the female either. Scooped up
4 by hand and 2 by live traps the next day (squirrel sized safeguards), a couple of "farts" as mentioned, enough to make you
take notice, but not enough to persist too long. Only those who were grabbed too hard or had an unexpected loud noise next
to them decided to let loose.

Only day recently I'd wished I had a truck instead of a sprinter though! smile

I pulled up to a place at about midnight and everyone was standing outside the house and all of the lights were on. Right place. Skunk in the living room. Behind couch. They had tried to lure it out with some cat food. It came out and ate the catfood and then went back to sleep under the couch.

I started by removing all of the furniture near the couch, bright wide open spaces everywhere but the couch. I set down a cage with a blanket on it at one end, got at the other end and used my squirt bottle (one of the best animal moving devices you'll ever pay 2 dollars for) to herd him in the cage.

I thought about doing the Pesky, but figured it wasn't the place. I did tail grab one from a window well a while back, but I cheated and used snake tongs.

You didn't put them in the front seat of your toy car?
The peroxide mix works well but you have to mix a new batch every time. Woolite works as well or better and it's easy to keep on hand. I'll have to post pics. later of dealing with babies. I'm not into tail grabs but if you grab them by the nap of the neck they go limp.

What works good to get rid of the smell of white vinegar? Whatever you do, don't use Pine sol. It locks in the freshness.

In my experience that's true for a while. At a certain size they let you know real quick they're having none of it.

I had a skunk in a cage last week. He asked me if I knew Pesky. When I nodded he shot me right in the wrist. Most of this story is true. ( Ever try to get skunk smell out of your watch band? )

Mike, I actually picked up 4 out of the 6 I have currently with the smart car! The place sells big rigs and services and the one maintenance worker said to me you gonna be able to fit them in there?

I said, "until I grow my business a bit more, I just can't afford a whole car!"

Got some laughs, of course, the funny part is watching 7-8 grown mechanics stand 60 feet away while you run around grabbing up juvenile skunks by hand and putting them in a box. The best comments were "look out he's right by your foot!" As though I was about to step on a pit viper of some sort.

I'd have to agree with LT on the nape grab. I like it too, but two things have effected how or when I use it. These little guys in the last batch were very dehydrated, thus the hide is tight so pinching up that little "tent" as vets refer to it (for sub q fluids) is tricky so the full body grab while tucking the tail is my preference, at least then if they spray a bit they get to share the joy with me!

smile

Justin

Ok TJ here's a different type of skunk tail grab . Customer had skunk in his squirrel trap and coverd trap . First unwrapped seen which way skunk was pointed then lifted skunk on angle to distract him with ground then reached in major problem at this point only half sec to reach to the tail was wrapped around body of skunk . So I alarmed him by poking him in the butt with pointer finger knowing good and well he would try to lift tail . Simple as a knotched stick
