I've seen some pretty strange bat roost areas, but this is a new one for me. There is a gap around the shaft on the top side of the fan housing, and bats are entering and roosting inside the fan unit. Guano falling through the vent holes onto the blades. Fan is outside on a patio.

That is a crazy spot Ron. With how many folks see dead or downed bats on porches with fans.

Do these folks not run the fan usually?

Last year we had a porch with 40 can lights brand new install.

Every other can had 4-6 bats inside of it, in this case Yuma myotis. Was an easy fix he had all the lights unfitted with the plastic covers they offer for them.

How many bats can you see in there?

Bats are getting into the top of the housing, right?

Ran into that myself last year. Big browns between the bulb and inside of the can. I diid a field expediant fix with cobra. Cut donuts out of cobra that slipped over the base of the bulbs and filled the void.

Justin, I didn't know that you could install covers on them and wouldn't know the maker to know where to order them. I scratched my head for awhile before I hit on that fix. I intially thought to make hardware cloth covers but thought the look wouldn't be right plus no way for the client to easily change the bulbs. These cans were up there under a gabled cedar deck and he used one of those bulb grabbers to change them out. The way I did it the donut comes down with the bulb and can be swapped out with the bulb.

Are you talking about Cobra Vent material? Might not be legal. Would Cobra Vent burn? Can lights get pretty hot.

That must be an old fan, because all of the fans I have installed in the last few years have a cover that goes over that hole and fits snuggly around the shaft.

Could you not take some hardware cloth and make like an inverted funnel and attach it to the screws on top of the houseing?

Time for a new fan! That is probably the easiest way to solve this one.

wouldn't you technically need to be licensed to replace the fan?

Depends widely on the state your in. Amazed at the variation in license requirements across the states.

Of course that's if you desire to be legal.

What's wrong with teaming up with an electrician? A trapper/electrician team is a better solution then jerry rigging a $100 fan.

Shortly after that picture was taken, Vinke was grabbed by an orca which promptly spit him out. He smelled like an otter; just didn't taste like one.
