Ok folks help me out here. Any suggestions on how to deter a band of coati?

The only way you can discourage any of those bands is to short circuit their amplifier. And whatever you do, dont let 'em hook up with Justin's rock squirrels.

LOL. I've run these mountains for many years and never seen one around here. Though I have seen them a couple hundred miles west. I'm guessing its just a band that is passing through the area as from what I read they probably would not stick around for our winters.

Single strand electric fence about a foot and a half off the ground should at least make them hold their tails different! Seems like I've read somewhere that they aren't very heat tolerant if you catch them in any type of trap.

I remember there was a band of them in Las Cruces, they were mainly hitting this ladies water feature and she had some excellent fruit trees that were ripe at the time too!

Do you have your trail cam out! Kind of a novelty to capture some of that footage, I remember over near Portal some folks were trying to document how many were using some of those mountain passes in the heavy border area.

That ringtail cat we had recently that was providing the homeowner a musky cabin every time they came up during the spring we ended up getting it on video on the latrine, right next to the swamp cooler under the back side porch of the house! They had thought it was under the homes foundation.

Ended up getting the ringtail on video, gray fox and a coyote all under the back deck! Of course they live on a ridge line with a nice two track running right down the middle of it with some great habitat!

They did have some holes under the foundation that were excluded but otherwise they ended up buying their kids (6-8 yr old boy and girl) a trail camera as they are wildlife fanatics, so now they have a family pics/video viewing every time they hit the cabin.

What are the Coati doing in your case down there?

Don't have a camera out yet. They are generally just making a nuisance of themselves. Getting into animal feed etc. not something that I would try and trap due to numbers, guessing the electric e fence will be the best option.

Don't know if it would work on coati, but the mix I use to deter domestic cats might. Keeps them out of my garden and the flower beds.
Mix two tablespoons of flour, one tablespoon of chili powder, one tablespoon of cayenne powder, and one tablespoon of hot Chinese mustard in two liters of luke warm water. Shake it well and put it into an old squirt bottle. Spread it generously were needed to keep them away. Only need to do this twice a summer around here.

That's pretty neat to hear. I've seen quite a few of them in the Burros, but never in the Sacs. It'd be nice if we were allowed 1 per year like AZ.

Not sure if this is helpful or not but in south America they were scared to death of the large boas. Live or dead.

I have trapped in Catron County,N.M. for 6 of the last 8 seasons and this past season was the first season that I had coatimundi incidental catches,more than I desired,though I had seen them in bands before in that area,occasionally. In my opinion,the big fires in the last two summers,the Wallow Fire to the west in Arizona and the Whitewater Baldy Fire last year in the Gila,have concentrated them more towards the north and east in N.M. I even caught them in the dead of winter,it seems they do not hibernate as much as coons do,in that area. They were attracted to any fresh meat bait set that I made and they liked my bobcat scent post sets with gland lure and urine. They are very hardy and can be easily caught and held in any #2 size or larger coil spring trap,with little to no damage to their feet. I think they would be hard on a lesser cage trap,they are strong with large canine teeth and can be a challenge to release with a catch pole,be careful. After being caught once,they will avoid your sets,most times,so try to make the first time count. I find that most other furbearers will avoid contact with and areas that the coatimundi frequent,especially the bobcats and grey fox. Good luck,hope you catch them all and be careful where you relocate them,they are truly a nuisance and they are protected in N.M.

Fire has definitely modified our landscape in major ways and continues to push various populations around. Between fire and drought
which are hand in hand at the moment anything is possible with ranges of some of these medium sized species with ability to adapt or travel.
Or simply have to move/adapt due to loss of primary food source and habitat with these major events.
