Got a hole the size of a soccerball or so under both my cabin and my neighbors shed. The neighbor nailed up some wire after having his live trap knocked around with dirt thrown all over the place. I think that's when it moved under our house. Big hole, thought the dog was trying to get at something, but after covering up with wire the critter dug an even bigger hole about 2 foot deep to get back under the deck. Whatever it was sure could dig. I've had a lot of mouse traps tripped without any catches, maybe the critter did that. I'm gonna set a live trap with some peanut butter with some vegetables and a mallow or something in the back and a blind set #2 at the hole. Any ideas what it could be?

First guess would be badger. Second would be wolverine but appears at least by google not to be around you.

I'm with DaveK, Though when I lived way North of you in the "mitten" and caught badgers, you are far more likely to have a woodchuck making itself at home. These are just more situations where even a $100.00 trail camera can tell you what you have in short order so you can assess the problem and target the proper species with appropriate exclusion, device, bait, tactics....

Mtncat, we always thought the "michigan wolverines" was a funny thing when we lived there too, though one year a wolverine actually showed up in the "thumb" portion of the state. Some folks on snowmobile managed to get a good quality pic of it and it was definitely a wolverine. The synopsis of how it got into this part of the state came to this following explanation....

The wolverine was likely scooped up in a garbage truck that was bringing trash from the part of Canada that borders this area and was brought and dumped there in the state....

Now myself knowing how far and quickly wolverine roam where they do exist, I can't help but fail to picture the loud machinery and scoops picking up this fast and secretive species and then having it actually ride all the way over from Canada without exiting the vehicle before customs! smile

That was the honest to god version they gave of how it came over!

Anyway, NFT, I'd go get a trail cam, and let us know what you see, Michigan does have plenty of badgers, but I'd still say where you are in the state more likely a woodchuck.

Alright, thanks guys, I'll use apples and try some peanut butter as something has been interested in mouse traps before, I'll let you know what happens.

Yeah, the nice thing about apples is that if you don't catch a woodchuck during the day, at least you'll have a coon during the night. Since I started to use Comstocks and no bait whatsoever, I've eliminated nearly all non-target catches and caught the woodchucks more than twice as fast. ( I guess it still could be a badger )
