Saw one out back today. Couldn't get my gun out of the closet fast enough to get a shot off. I set a live trap with some lettuce and some apple. Will he likely use the same path he did when I saw him and spooked him off from my porch? I was pretty far away, I don't think he saw me.

Set up a trail cam and time the groundhogs every move. When you know the time of day it moves about, set up with your 338 Lapua sniper rifle 600 yards downwind, be camel-flaged, and wait. You will also need a spotter.

To catch a groundhog.... First you must think like a groundhog.... And if at all possible, look like one.........

Dave, Dave, Dave, if we only trapped animals that were doing damage, we would only be trapping for the people who can't afford us in the first place. We are intent on catching animals before they do damage. ( Which is one of the things that makes us so popular )
Now, once we catch an animal, then we have the opportunity to relocate it in an area where it can really do some damage. ( Hopefully, someone who owes us money )

What I am saying, in conjunction with woodchucks, is that you probably have three times as many as we do, so we have to take advantage of every call.

You can shoot 'em with a lapua, but there is no sport in that. I like to hide real good and call them in close. Hunt them on their terms. Then use a bow or an atl-atl.

I took one of those gobbler shake tubes and gutted it and retro-fitted a rodent squeaker into the end of it for a custom woodchuck locater call, and then once I stalk in and set up the double bull blind, I switch on the fox-pro with a download of falling pears. Don't forget cover scent, I always chew some watermelon bubble yum when I'm in the groundhog blind.

No den location. but the woodchucks have always crossed your yard at the same spot each year. Not sure of the exact spot. But its always left from right from the thick patch. I'm trying some bait right now, using lettuce, some apple, strawberry, peanut butter bread, and some other vegetables. Something a little different at each spot. Nothing yet, but I'll just wait and see.

NFT, if you can lure them in with anything short of a female in heat, please share your secret with the rest of us.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but everything you mentioned would mean a raccoon in a trap to us.

Paul,

Here in North Carolina I must be able to show at least 50 bucks worth of damage before I can write a depredation permit and remove the animal. Just the critter showing up in the back yard is not enough.

The only exception to the visible damage rule is if the animal is actually IN the house. Not the barn, not the storage shed, not the kids sand box but IN the house.

I have to turn down a lot of calls from folks who see a fox, coon, possum or whatever in the back yard or walking across the property. I have to ask, "Is it causing any damage?". If they tell me "No" then I have to tell them, "I'm sorry, but there is nothing I can legally do."

Well, I take that back.... I can deter or exclude the animal.

I feel the same way and almost always ask what was it doing when presented with "I saw XXX in my yard". If it was just passing through I wish them luck and move on but if like my last call of fox on the back porch and missing cats I consider the behavior alone enough to warrant removal.

ponyboy, I caught a woodchuck today and then got another 'chuck job and I used the same Comstock. I set it up and as I'm driving along I notice some greenish/brownish stuff on my hand. So I take a whiff and said to myself, "Ponyboy would be proud."

By the way, where did the handle ponyboy come from? I had a Indian Paint that I loved to ride but I also was known to put a pretty good dent in a pony of beer when I was younger.

Its not ADC, its recreation. Just figured I'd get more replies on the ADC forum. Already checked it out with the DNR.

NFT, you're probably right, recreating is big with us ADC guys. ( We're also pretty good at re-creating )
