Is anyone thinking about how this may effect their business? How would you cope with rapidly increased inflation....or a collapsing dollar?

Dave, inflation effects us all (not just businesses either) and in many ways.

As for the link you posted, it is a commercial for the originator and he uses the most obnoxious sales gimmick of all, fear. He spends most of an hour filling you with doom and gloom, disaster predictions and then let's you know that for the low, low introductory price of $49.95 you can get his words of wisdom to not only protect you from world wide devastation but in fact lets you make money while the economic chaos ruins all around you.

Oh by the way, the price goes to $149 after the introductory period.

Color me skeptical.

Yeah, I know the advertisement...and you are right about the gimmick. But he does make some interesting points. I read a lot of business news...and it seem that there is more and more articles about currency, currency war, and countries moving away from the USD. There are guys on both sides debating deflation and inflation. Yet, you look around, and the majority of folks seem to be impacted by inflation. It's a scary world when you think of the USD.

Read up about bitcoins.

I'm not scared and there is no reason for you to be either. You can't lose if you don't play the game. If you play the game, sometimes you'll win and sometimes you'll lose. That's just the way it goes.

And I have read up on bitcoin. Just another currency.

Except that bitcoins has a finite supply....like gold. The USD is backed by confidence in the government.

Dave, I know you have the intelligence but please don't become one of the ultra-rich. I have way too many multi-millionaires that would trade their life and their family for mine in an instant.

I hear you. Sometimes I just want to have a deeper conversation than some of the topics. Can only answer the best bait for raccoons so many times.

No....but no reason not too. They can be converted back to dollars.

Some of my thoughts were what to do with operating cash for the business in a time where the USD is collapsing (rapid inflation). Some spend it as fast as they can on equipment. Buying gold or silver is not too liquid...unless you trade etf's. Then you could trade into other currencies...such as bitcoins.

Buy cornfields. Ethanol is using all the corn up and after last year's weather, there is really a shortage. I have a very good friend in the seed corn business and to say that he's doing very well, would be an understatement.

Until last week when the basis went away and corn prices dropped a buck lol. Should have sold every drop right out of the field last fall for 8 bucks but instead paid big money for gas to dry it and more in power to run bin fans all winter just to find out vomitoxin was in it and cost you even more so you can sell it in April for 6.50. Its like they say some days chicken, some days feathers! lol But hey seed corn is the way to go sell it 80k kernals at a time no matter the test weight, beats by the bushel!

it is not a stupid question if you do not know the answer

For me, operating cash needs to stay as available as possible. That usually means cash. When I come across an opportunity or an unplanned expense I don't want to have to jump through hoops before I deal with it.

The period of highest inflation that I remember was the 1970's and went as high as 13%. It was uncomfortable for a while but I got through it. At rates like that, longer term investments are the only thing I know of that will keep up. At that point it's no longer operating cash.

Are you expecting rates that will exceed that?

I have no idea how high inflation could go. But, thanks for putting into perspective. Many businesses are pretty even keel, in terms of sales. With extreme seasonality of adc work, I would imagine that inflation would be a challenge when managing cash flow. Especially, just prior to ramping up for the season. The demand for cash changes.

Referencing 1970's inflation got me thinking. How did the gov calculate it back then? Funny how they started massaging the formula.
It is staggering to think that inflation is over 10%, using older formulas. What did bank accounts pay in interest in the 1970's? Wasnt it 12%....

Some banks where I lived got to over 20%.Loans were up to 26% at the banks as a standard loan.

I sold cull cows for as low as .07 a pound. Feed prices doubled, but not to the exreme they are now.

Carter did the same thing as Obama, only Obama is doing it faster and more of it.
