I have this barrel stove in my barn that I'd like to use this fall/winter while skinning and such. It has been set up just like this and I fired it up once last winter, but I don't think it's exactly vented/exhausted properly. HA! Do you guys have any tips on how it should be done? When I burned it, if it's at all windy the smoke doesn't go out, it just stays in my barn. Also, I'm nervous about how it goes outside..like it will get too hot around where it goes through the wall (the wall is only an inch thick there).

Thanks!

#1 I am concerned about the wood directly behind your stove. It looks like it could get pretty hot. Cover with something fire resistant, or tin.
#2 Your stove pipe isn't finished. On the piece coming out of the wall on the outside, put an elbow, then straight pipe on up to the top. To draw well, the top of the pipe should be a little higher than your roof. Put a cap on top.

Just my 2 cents.

The exit pipe needs to be above the roof line of the barn. Whats happening is your getting down draft & it's pushing the smoke back inside. Also, I'd be concerned about that regular pipe going through the wood like that. Thats a fire waiting to happen. Get the proper stuff for it before you regret it.

Sounds like it is not drawing right. You may need a taller stove pipe. The rising heat going out the pipe pulls the smoke with it. Like a siphon, kinda. Taller pipe = more pull. The old timers around here told me it needs to be a certain height above the crest of your roof to draw right. I forgot waht that certain amount was, but my chimney to the fireplace in my is not it. The number of bends in your pipe will reduce your pull too. Fewer is better.

Thanks guys for the good advice, so far.

I realize the fire and heat danger..that is the reason for the post. I didn't set it up like this, it was like this when I bought the place. I'm trying to correct it to make it as safe as possible.

Here's a couple more specific questions:
#1. What can be used where the pipe passes through the wall?
#2 To get above the top of the barn, I'd need about 24 feet of pipe. If I just go above the roofline in the picture, would that work?

The cap should be at least 2 ft higher than anything within 10 ft of the pipe.

A min of 18" should be maintained from any protected flamable's, and 36" from unprotected flamables.

The flue pipe thru the wall and up should be insulated to keep it warm so it draws right.

They sell insulated wall pass thru's and flue pipe just for that.

Also the stove has an 8" flue hole, and should NOT be necked down.

What I see is a disaster waiting to happen.

cut the hole the pipe goes through bigger so that there is 4 to 6 inches of clearence around it,then get a peice of tin that will cover the hole and cut a hole just big enough to fit the pipe through slide it on and affix it to the wall keeping the room between the pipe and the wood.
and , you need to get above the peak of the roof for best results.put a piece of hardware cloth and a cap on it to keep out birds, rain and as a spark arrester.
It looks to me like I would reposition the stove a little so that it has at least 30 inches of clearence from the wooden areas so that they don't get to hot and burst into flames, for safties sake.

Here you go. Hit this and print it out. I got it from a buddy when doing mine. It will give you spacing and everything.
