This summer I plan on doing some nuisance coyote trapping for my grandfather. He plants a couple acre watermelon patch each year and when they start to get ripe the coyotes come in and eat 3 or 4 every night. Im new to trapping but have caught a few yotes. What type of lures work during the summer? I know it is harder to trap them during that time but I was curious if anybody has had any success with certain lures/sets. Any help would be appreciated.

Urine. When all else fails.

I would start now if you can... Urine and gland lure if you can get sets out know. Others wise urine posts, blind sets for summer. If your going to use bait in the summer in GA make sure its fresh.

It's not in GA my grandpa lives in Alabama. I always spend at least a week there during the summer so I was gonna try and do some trapping then, so settin now isn't an option. I've never set a urine post before. Where do you put the trap and do you use any gland lure on it?

Most any type of baits dont work too well in georgia and my guess alabama in the summer[the ants will eat it fast as you put it out].Urine,some on a cotton ball or sheeps wool heips.Set on location in a narrow travelway if possible.I dont know if you can use snares in alabama but if you can you have a way better chance[far as blind sets in travelways].You cant snare yotes in georgia tho.No matter what you do,summer yote trapping is pretty tough.I would walk the edge of the peremeter of the field and try to find the pathes they are useing-blind set there and further back up the trails into the woods if possible.Hope this helps.

Now that I'm a little more a wake let me add-you really don't need bait because the field is the bait.Make sure you can trap yotesin Alabama in the summer or try to get a crop damage permit.If you can't use snares bury foothold between two sticks spaced out for the coyotes walking pace in narrow travel way.Make sure the sticks are 3/4 diameter or smaller-you might have to lean a small stick or broomsage across the trail at placed trap to slow his walk pace but be careful not to crowd him too much.

Coyotes are coyotes. Sets are the same, if you know how to make a variety. The main importance if you are doing a guarding type of trapping is to be subtle and use a variety of sets and odors. Scent posts and walk thru types are my main sets for coyote control. Dirt holes can be effective also if the coyotes arent too shy of them from the fall trapping season. You will find out that fact soon enough. A week of trapping isnt giving you much time to make an impact particularly if you dont have much experience.

You will most likely catch more coon and oppossum first before the coyotes.Would be a good idea to cage trap the same area to catch the short legged animals first would be a good idea.

If you are going to take it to them, then you must find the area where they are living. Summer denning coyotes use regular general routes to feed pups at the den and travel back and forth from their hunting areas to their dens or summer hang out haunts.

Dont over lure or bait if you know they are already coming to you.

Using bait here in the summer is not good idea with all the fire ant's. I use mostly gland and urine in the summer month's.

Yep rugged is right fire aunts will be your worst enemy. They were bad in December I can't imagine summer time!

No snares in Bama.

I pulled some traps this past weekend and sure enough fire ants next to the set. You can't hide your traps from the pesky little buggers.

Powered foot snares are legit in Bama. Six inch outside spread on footholds.

Not lookin to hammer em just want to have some fun while I'm there. It legal during the summer on private land if you are an agent of the land owner, that's what the book says. Thanks for the help. Also does anyone have any pics of a post set? Never tried one. Where do you lure? How big of a post? Where do you bed trap? Do I need a black stick cause I've heard coyotes are attracted to them?
