Howdy Y'all ,

I got a friend that has a raccoon problem in his barn and has barn cats . So my question is what is the best bait to use in a Live Trap for raccoons were there is Cats around ? The cats can and do go outside all over the property also so Footholds and other traps are probally not going to be able to use . Suggestions Please .

Marshmallows work good, I like the cream. Your always gonna catch the occasional cat though. Footholds would be a big no no.

This may be way too simple, but unless you set in a cat runway, the baits that say "Won't Catch Cats" are the ones I go with. Of course, many of our customers are just as happy to get rid of a cat as they are a raccoon. And then, of course, you have the people who want the cats gone but won't pay for raccoons. If anyone finds a bait that says "Won't catch raccoons" and it works; mail it to me collect!

Thank you Guys . The friend wants the cats around to catch mice in his horse barn but wants the raccoons gone . I was thinking that a Sweet bait might be the way to go for the live traps since the cats shouldn't be interested in a sweet bait correct lol ?

I'd bet the coons catch more mice than the cats. Sweet baits would be better, you just never know with cats.

If your cage traps have previously caught other animals be ready to release some cats, no matter what bait you use. Curiosity...
That being said, marshmallows with molasses may work well for you since it's a horse barn.

Yep, on the curiousity. Sweet baits are going to be your go to but boths cats and coons are two of the most curious critters out there. The plus though is that most cats are easily caught once. So in this case set your cages keep the coons give puss a good shake and release.

When you say "live Traps", I guess you mean cage traps. Most foot traps are also live traps.

Yes cage trap is what I mean and I should have used that name . I appolagize for not using the proper name on the site , I reckon I been talking to to many non trapping people lately that seems to like the term live trap instead of cage trap again I am Sorry for using the wrong term/name for the trap I will be using .
