Talked to a guy today that said he had to shoot a skunk that was chasing his dog. He sent it off and it was rabid. Which leads me to wonder if anyone has ever sent off a skunk and had it come back not rabid? Anyhow, he said a few weeks after that he was cutting firewood and shut down the saw and heard something. Said he was thinking sick hawk, about 20 feet away he found a sick skunk. He finished it off, didn't bother having it tested. What he described must have sounded alot like a mink scream which I have heard. I told him he very well be the only man living to have heard a skunk make a sound, other than stomping and a little hissing. I trust the guys story, he killed the first coyote I ever saw, in like 1982 or thereabouts.

I've heard a few different skunk vocalizations. They sometimes chatter like they're talking to themselves. They grunt a little when they're grubbing and they have a sad, high pitched, singing/whistle like sound they make in the early mornings when they can't get out of a cage.

Yeah, I go along with exactly what sgs said, but they don't do it often.

I have actually heard skunks vocalize only twice in all the years I have worked with them and both times it was in the spring when I was setting a trap for them at a entry point where they were coming and going from under a house. The best I can describe it is it sounded like a very low volume pig squeal. I have had many costumers tell me they have heard that sound before but that was the first time I had actually heard it myself. I believe that it is a first year female that is being chased by a male trying to breed her and she has no idea what is happening and is scared to death. At no other time of the year have I ever had a client tell me they have heard that sound before and we catch hundreds of skunks a year and I have never heard one make an actual vocal sound except at that time of year.

In short, yes. The full biological/zoological answer, however, is much more complicated. The knot one would normally find in a dog penis, known scientifically as the Shrodenburger Knot, is based on the type of knot one would normally use to tie ones shoes. The knot found in a skunk penis is of a different sort, and is commonly compared to the type of knot one might use whilst sailing, or tying a noose.

Maybe this explains some sounds. Is this were the term tying the knot comes from

Yes the sound is very high pitch and disturbing. Put two skunk from two
differnt areas in the same trap. With a seperator, the noise will not stop.

At least now we know if we have a question about either knots or peni, ( Is that the plural for penis? ) that Kermit seems to an authority on both subjects. ( I can't even tie a decent knot )

I was knot aware of this. I have spent all of these years calling it a bacculum. This can only mean that somewhere there was a scientist named Shrodenburger and his colleagues thought that he was a real wiener.

Fascinating stuff on the skunk vocalizations. I may research this more and approach Primos, imagine the estrous skunk squealer, people will be waiting in line!

Only once - heard a skunk "growl" - very similar to the sound an agitated Grey Squirrel makes. May be called a churr.
