I always have them sign terms and conditions as well as the estimate on my iPad before completing any work. I've only had one home owners association not pay in time. After a few warnings I have my neighbor (lawyer) send them a letter on his letterhead and they paid right away.

If it's true that the more money people owe you, the bigger the company, we just passed Ford and are heading for GE!

I have worked at the owner of a very large coperation(4 billion this guy is worth)During my painting days .The owner of this coperation wanted someone at his estate every saturday to do some kind of paint work.Told my boss at the time that he knows how much money the painting company makes off of him every year. Said he better not get a bill.Well one summer ,my boss told him that he could not afford to send someone there and pay out of his pocket. So the owner of this coperation agreed to pay me out of his pocket cash for every saturday I would work there .I worked two sats in a row ,never got a dime nor even offered a drink of water ,being how it was my boss who made the arrangments ,I left it up to him to get this guy to pay. That next saturday the guy came out , told me to tell my boss to stop crying like a girl or go buy some dresses,as he pulled out his fat wallet $100 dollar bills over flowing. and paid me for the two days. That was the last saturday I worked there .My boss had to pay me for that last saturday.
This billionaire ,owns many apt.complex, office buildings and so on .I had to paint this occupied apt in one of his complex. There was this old lady living in what we call a jr.one bed.My brother and I went in painted it ,she gave us drinks and snacks. When we were done .She tipped both of us .As we left I looked at how much ,my bro did at the same time .$60.00 each.I went back to make sure she didn't make a mistake. Was no mistake.
I have worked for many a rich person who were down to earth ,but by far the lower ,and middle class has always either tipped ,offered drinks to lunch. This has been the case as far as i can see.

Guys, like I said previously; if you were born a jerk, the amount of money you have won't change your predisposition to jerkiness!

We offer no discounts. If payments are not received, collections and small claims get involved, all time and hassle added to the bill. very simple. The phrase, " cost of doing business" is passed along to all customers.

Small claims court.

I had a lady who owed me 117 dollars for some work I did. She kept giving me the run around, promising payment time and time again and then not being around when I showed up to collect. Finally, I surprised her and showed up when she wasn't expecting me. I actually caught her at home.

That's when she finally told me that she had no intention of paying me. I told her, "Fine. I'll see you in court."

She got mad as a wet sitting hen and huffed, "You would take me to court of 117 dollars?"

"Yes, Mam." I was still being as polite as I knew how to be.

"It will cost you more than that to take me to court!" she said and she was entirely correct on that point.

"Yes, Mam, you're right." I answered. "But if I don't, then it's not fair to my customers who do pay me."

She wrote me a check.

We use a service agreement. At the bottom of the usual stuff it says that if not paid I will reposses all materials used for repairs and release on site the same number of animals by species I removed.
Only had to remove repairs once. But I do get blaimed for animals that cause problems later.

Yeh - I'd kinda like to do that but in most cases it would cost me more to retrieve materials than it's worth.

I give everybody 30 days plus seven, the reason, they all think they have 30 days to pay like a credit card bill and I add in the extra 7 days because on day 30 they mail the check and it takes 7 days for pony express to get to my door. 99% arrive between 30-37 days so my formula works, I also put a little sticker under the amount due that says
"INVOICE DUE UPON RECEIPT" that helps a little.

Fortunately, I haven't had any problems this year with receivables. I must admit though that I have a great customer base and weeded out any slow pay ones. I get a set up fee at the inception of the agreement and I generally, but not always, bill for each capture as they occur per the service agreement and this is on a net 30 basis. This helps with cash flow and relieves the customer of a little "sticker shock" if they were to receive a big bill with multiple captures. When billing I include a self addressed stamped envelope to encourage prompt payment by check and get most payments within 14 days. Corporate accounts take around 25. I am also seeing more and more payments sent via online payment systems and these take right at 25 days as well.

One thing that I've noticed; When I started telling folks that there is a charge for services upon their first call to me, I stopped having payment problems.

Oh.... And as far as removing materials that I've put in? Can't do it here. Once it's attached it becomes part of their real estate and their property. If I remove anything that I put in, I can be charged with theft and destruction of property... Regardless or whether or not I've been paid.

Is that removal thing like a national law? If so, I am a repeat offender. ( On one of them, I'm proud to say, I'm reasonably sure that I ruined a couple of inside walls ) And come to think of it, on another, he wouldn't pay for the really nice closure that I installed, so I took it off. He traded squirrels for raccoons; Man, he should have paid me for the closure. We also did the raccoons and they were way more expensive!

P.S. V3N, I notice you're have trouble with bugs ( especially ones the make a figure 8 ) We also do pest control!
