Flying squirrel activity here in Pigeon forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg Tn is getting active. The kits from the second breeding cycle are now juveniles. These are one of my big earners and I have come up with creative ways to target them. Last year we caught 120 flying squirrels, this year as of today we are at 109!
Lets see some photos and here some stories on how you target them.me
Very seldom do I have an attic to work in most of my jobs are cathedral ceilings, metal roofs, and 60 ft drops off the back of the cabins.

Hey Paul, I bet it is hard for you to believe that I've caught flyers as far east as Menomonee Falls and River Hills. I have yet to catch my first one in Ozaukee county, where I live, but I've got Waukesha, Washington, and Milwaukee covered. We probably get less than fifty a year. Can you handle your flyers bare-handed too?

Just the ones that don't bite! I use alot of rat traps on shelves. I go to cages only when the customer wants them relocated. Which is fine (gota plant the seed) My best gig was 21 flyers and 3 greys out of a log home. I had 12 locations set up. You gota getum quick before the chickadees and nut hatch find your sun flower seeds.

I treat them kind of like a bat job. Seal the house then fit the entries/exits with colony traps.

Usially 2-3 nites we can leave if the time of year is right.Exclusion with one way doors work well however as time will reveal a percentage will continue to test the structure for reentry and chew ins will occur in some cases. This is determined by how long they have inhabitated the structure. Bats are the same with their memory and persistance at re entry for many years down the road after eviction.

Typical entry points for me on these log homes. And they are never close to the ground.

Hey Paul, this is really going to blow your mind; our best job, so far, has been an older house in Elm Grove. It has probably been covered more times by guys looking for flyer entrances than it has been covered by snow. We have, in the past three years, taken more than 60 flying squirrels from this property. ( And I think we finally are done )

On the bright side, this was not a financial problem for the family, but can you imagine that we've caught more flying squirrels in one house in three years than we normally catch total for our entire four county area in a year?

Paul I believe it. This happens during the breeding season around here. Those houses are like a pick up joint that they all come to. Durring this time the client hears more chattering and running around than they do scatching and chewing. Those males are freaks during breeding season. Their testicles are so large I don't no how they fly! The landing must hurt! cry I guess landing on a metal roof would be better than a shingled one! Then I get a slow period which is july. Maybe 1 or 2 per house. And thats usually a wet female. Now those kits are teenagers and ready to party! Gosh I love dem flyers!

We don't have that problem up here in the north country. besides If and when I put this trap up I check them early in the AM.

Dew's probably right on this one. Flyers seem to handle a little heat better than cold and wet around here.
