Got to a job today where the previous guy was fired (never showed up on time), to find some woodpecker damage and some flash tape he installed still up. The gentleman said he has not seem the woodpecker back, nor any more damage. I'll be completely honest, I seldom recieve woodpecker calls, so im fairly green on this animal. My question is after I remove the flash tape, what are some options for my next step? I don't like charging someone for something I have not done much in the past, but I would alsi like to learn at the same time, any input would be greatly apprrciated.

I do alot of woodpecker jobs here. Wildlife control supplies has a balloon called Guarden eyes. Yellow with a tail. Looks like a beach ball. Go to tractor supply and get a fiberglass dowel. For log homes I drill a 3/8 hole ram the dowel in at a 45 and hang your balloon. The only complaints I had are that the neighbors now hate my clients because the peckers are eating their house! I did have 1 balloon deflate. I just replaced it. They work great!

Thanks Paul, is this something you leave up year around? Have you ever worked with the big spiders that drop down with any sound? I've saw people modify a vent, place the spider in the vent so its not visible near the damaged area. I'll try the baloon.

I've had excellent results with the flash tape, it just doesn't look that nice. This spring I got to show how well it works to my wife, we had a flicker drumming on the gutters right above the bedroom, I used clothspins to attach three strips to the gutters and he left the first day never to return. Usually people call me after they've tried the scary eye ballons, I take them down and put my tape up. To increase your income on the woodpecker jobs look up Tim Juliens article in last years WCT magazine on hole repair. I've made more money on the repairs then on the tape installation, plus you're alreay there so it's just bonus money. One last tip I buy my tape form Forestry Suppliers, it's twice as heavy as the stuff WCS sells. Our Montana winds shread WCS's in a matter of minutes. Sorry Alan, just speaking the truth.

I have all the issues in a file cabinet, I'll look it up in the next couple evenings. If I can find a couple extra minutes.

These are available from WCS and work great. Hold up better than flash tape. Be sure to add drop of oil to swivel.

Charles, are you talking about Scott Behren's flashers?

What is a good starting point in price to install the flasher or the baloon? 8 ft ladder will reach, very close to home.

Which ever item the particular bird is most frightened.

These types of jobs scare me...to many ways to disappoint a customer. Looks junky...only works for so long...or doesn't work....so now you have to apply for a permit to take lethal action...now it is going to cost HOW MUCH!?? How do you price a job like that? There is a lot to think about...

Perhaps, the idea should be to engineer the problem out. Install a different siding.

Is there a spot with two holes one twice the size as the other . These are where the male and female roost at night and will lay there eggs come spring . Most of the time this is what's going on .

The last time the guy saw the bird was four months ago. He says the bird comes once or twice a year for 2 years now. Every hole is a different size. He doesn't care if I put a balloon or flashers up so I'll try one or the other! Thanks gentleman.
