It's illegal to use traps on "sport" fish here, so we can only use on "rough" fish.

But, by accident, yep, it happens.

I catch a lot more turtles than bass in them but did go 8 for 8 one day last week with 6 turtles and 2 bass.

I've never used one, but don't you set the trap with the door up against a den opening? I don't get how you catch like that.

Mike I caught 4 bass on a golf course pond job with colony traps right int he muskrat den entrances. Maybe the bass lie in wait int he dens for prey?

I don't know. Just what is a colomy trap? Probably only going to catch your typical standard colomy in it. Don't forget to check your colomy once daily.

Colony traps have two doors and also can be set on bottom edge sets . The same way you would trap minnows in a creek . Bass seem to get caught at the dens

Actually Chris, I caught my first bass in a colony trap this year. I even took pictures. What fish knocks a wire door open so that it can get caught?

I've caught bass, catfish, frogs, turtles, and yes even a few muskrats in colonies. Its the premise and mindset on which this thread was started that I'm commenting on.

I've accidentally caught bigger fish in traps than with a rod and reel...

Grass carp . Now thats a crazy fish . They run out of weeds to eat they just come up out of the water and eat grass up on the banks .

My buddy caught a mink and a muskrat at the same time in a 330 , came back the next day he had a 8 lbs northern pike in the same trap . That happened like ten years ago and I'm still hearing that story . Then he's got the white mink story he caught two in the same week . And that story goes into the bronze coons .
