What are the best gloves to buy for the money for handling wild animals? What are the good and bad of the ones you have?

To be honest, I have one old pair of welder's gloves that I use for picking up something that I know is going to bite me. I only pick up the biters for pictures. The rest of the time I wear what ever will keep my hands warm and I try to keep my fingers out of animals' mouths.

I like use a squirrel clamp or coon clamp , it's what we call a conibear you just slap it on his head or hold it with one hand and run him into with the other , I just keep a cage trap ready so I can drop them into it so he doesn't sir come to the clamp . I've never had much luck with gloves , a coon can be grabbed by the tail if he's getting away just hold them up and if he trys to get you just give it a little shake , like Paul said welding gloves come in all shape and thickness , just google welding supply store in your area so you can try them on first

As my old boss use to say after decades of handling wild and captive carnivores, the gloves depend on what you are trying to prevent.
Scratches and saliva getting into skin and wounds is one thing but many mammals can break your your fingers and crush them just the same
with or without the gloves.

We have some of the staple covered version bought through WCS. I like them as nic said for when you think it is a higher likelihood. Otherwise
I'm trying to avoid those situations as much as possible and use other tactics when in close quarters.

Justin, when you say, "break your fingers and crush them" you do realize of course that we're talking about raccoons and such, as opposed to polar bears and crocodiles and professional wrestlers, right?

I prefer not to wear gloves, unless I am in a situation that I have no other choice. Sometimes gloves can give a false sense of security and have you doing things you should not., same as tiger paw shoes will suggest you should walk on roof pitches that you know you should not.

I use lineman gloves, when a coon grabs my hand it is going to hurt no matter what I have on just won't break the skin LOL
