Hey yall. My name is pierce Bennett and I live over in western Ohio. I am interested in trying to find some ginseng root.... I was introduced to it by the guy I sell my fur to who also buys roots... But I don't know hardly anything about the root. I just know it has red seeds And can be harvested in September. So I am looking for help on identifying, harvesting, proper care, and anything that I would need to know about ginseng. I'm not even sure if I have any in my woods but I will also have other areas to look.... I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Pierce

pierce, your gonna need a well drained area, and the woods should have a mix of trees like maple, dogwoods, ash..............you will find very little in heavy oak or pine.

make yourself familliar with companion plants such as indian turnip, bloodroot, goldenseal....................all these plants favor the same area.

there are a few plants that can fool ya if your a beginner,,,,the indian turnip can fool ya because of the red berries,,,,,,,virginia creeper can trick ya too because of the leaf arrangement.......even young ash trees can do it.

one thing that can really help ya out is that it's one of the very first plants to turn yellow.

Not to jack the thread, but can anyone help me out with location a little better, just starting points, am i looking for rocky areas, hillsides, flat land. Does location of plants have more to do with soil type or terrain, or what?
