I thought this might be interesting to some of you on the Wildcrafting forum. I found this guy while mushroom hunting one year on State land.

Woww that's about the biggest one i've ever seen. There was a tree that had some on it but it fell off and now there is a big white spot on the tree. Neat pic

I am a strong supporter of Catch and Reset trapping.

It's the best practice for our sport!

I'm really not sure, but have heard it's from stress; injuries, parasites, insects, virus, or fungus. Maybe someone more in the know can chime in.

A burl begins life as a gall--a tumor on plant tissue caused by stimulation by fungi, insects, or bacteria. Evidently, only slight irritation to the bark causes a gall. The gall grows to become a burl. The wood grain inside is sometimes beautiful with many birds-eye type grain patterns so woodworkers like them, especially for bowl making as they tend not to split. One I found seemed to show an early stage as it was growing many small branches which eventually die off the burl.
