i would rather have longsprings than coils for water trapping. i love how easy they set and bed. the also seem to have more holding power to me.

How do you install the pit pans

So I have a question, I just put a elec cover on my victor #4 pan. And it wobbles bad. How do you adjust pans on a long spring. I checked my others and they wobble also.

Sounds like you need to add a extra washer on the pan bolt.

I could show you. But I cant explain it

Stealthbear has it right- also close the eye on the dog as much as you can and still have it move freely - Then put two strands of tie wire threw the pan eye like this -




These mods will eliminate most of the pan wobble and add pan tension.
The groves for the miles trigger are not super deep - the more angle you put on the groves the less pan tension you will have - Takes a little practise to get it right but it does work..
All of my 3 and 4 longs are set up this way..

i never understood removing pan wobble with wire, i saw LYNX's archive about that, and i tried it. it helped a little, but not much. if you want pan wobble to be ELIMINATED, try this

OR...........................................order the PIT pans from your puter chair and install them when they show up. I can weld and I like to tinker as much as anyone. I have home built a ton of my trapline eqipment but hear this...

The PIT system is the absolute best thing to happen to older DLS traps. Bar NONE.

Yes....I got a fantastic deal on the trap itself at $5 each, but you can get them pretty regular for $7-$8 which would put you at $10.50 after the PIT. All that other stuff is fine if it works for you, but IMO, the below is the only way to go.

I've been looking at the sleep creek DLS #3, #4, and #4 1/2, i want to mod them up with the whole nine yards, Like expanded pans, and lamination, i been looking at the #4 since its a little bigger than #3 and lot cheaper than the 4 1/2, the number 3 has a 6 inch jaw spread and the 4 has a 6 1/2 and the 4 1/2 has a 7 1/2, i'm only going to buy a couple and mod them up and try them on flat sets, and if i like them I'll take out a loan from the bank. LOL, if anyone could give advice i would appreciate it. PM me if you like

It is a great beaver trap, but I would be reluctant to set a sleepy creek 4 1/2 on land almost anywhere in east texas without an extremely good reason personally. We don't have to many restrictions on trapping in texas but that is because texas trappers are under the radar of the general public for the most part. All it might take is one bad situation where a trapper showed poor judgement to change that. There really isn't a need for such a large and powerful trap on land when targeting anything less than wolves or lions. I don't think that extra jaw spread is worth the considerably greater gripping pressure it would put on animals coyote size or smaller. Your call, but if you do decide to set them on land please be extra careful.
