read Dons post above He's telling true when he talks about fall roots wieghing more, some roots like bloodroot and mayapple will die back way sooner.

Black and blue cohosh are flowering now let them make seed before digging.

My season for gensieng opens 1 august, but none of the berries are ripe until late aug/sept and thats when I start digging wish others would wait but buyers will start getting plenty of roots beginning 1 August.

Theres a lot smarter folks here to give you more answers.

Thanks Stan

This is all new area for hunting for me cause of moving, Plus it's been awhile since I dug.I'm just out looking now and marking on the GPS.

Seng opens Aug 1st here also.I never pick before Sept.Never got into Cohoshes but found Black and Blue today along with some small 2 and 3 prongers.Only seen 1ea. 4 pronger but I'm betting there is more higher up on the ridge.

Still haven't found bloodroot yet.I remember that it was the first root we use to dig.I just can't remember the best dates/times.

Thanks again Frank........

Mayapple will also be dieing off for the year in a few more weeks. Mayapple dries heavier than any root as far as I can tell. Roots should never be dug before they go to seed. It takes all the plants strength to make the berries, therefore after the seeds ripen the root starts getting the sap and it's nutrition back and starts weighing more. The later you wait into the fall the more sugars the roots have in them and this makes the plants weigh more.
