i don't have the money for steel pots so is a galvanized one good for both obviously one for each. will the galvanized make an oder on the traps or what.

The galvanized containers would not be my choice - I believe that the heat does fatigue the metal, limiting the life of the container, and during that process very well may impart odors to "contaminate" the contents.

Steel containers, large canning pots, can be found at garage sales. One member here uses a large, electric deep fat fryer for his wax - the beauty of which is the temperature control to avoid overheating and a wax fire. The "dollar" stores carry very reasonably priced, large stainless steel containers with lids that may be suitable for your application.

I don't know if this pertains to the topic, but we found an old crockpot at a thrift store (goodwill, salvation armys are good places to look too) for 2 bucks that does the waxing job good. If you have tons of traps to do though, then I would go with something larger.

This thing has your wax ready in a few minutes and keeps it at just the right temp. Holds 3- #1 coils or a #3 DLS. I waxed over 120 traps in a couple hous, It along with the dying process allows just enough time to talk with your buddies and enjoy your favorite beverage. One of my favorite things to get together and do each year.

I use a 20+ gallon barrel for dying though.

I use galvanized garbage cans for dying traps. I have a very large porcelin freezer drawer I use for wax. I found this thing about 30 yrs. ago. doubt you could get one anymore.

Big Lots is another place to find ss pots w/lids. I have used one of these for years as my waxing pot.

Some places you have to buy sets, and they won't sell you just one pot and lid (Wal-Mart).

I think that most of the pots I have seen at Big Lots are somewhat heavier than the Wal-Mart versions.

DON'T forget to buy the lid for waxing containers.

I can't buy galvanized as cheaply as most ss.

Robbie, go over to your big time auto parts store or to the tractor dealerships and try to find the containers that their chain comes in. If they haven't smashed them to badly they make great dyeing and waxing pots, just pop them ontop of a propane burner, like from a turkey fryer.

Make sure you clean them real well though as they have alot of oil in them.

Also, when you boil or dye your traps put something on the bottom of the barrel to keep your traps off the direct heat.

well a thin piece of metal will alow more direct heat, could weaken the springs

just something I was told Stick, I cannot confirm otherwise but it makes sence to me.

I have been told that too, and have been told the opposite as well. For me, I don't really worry about it, if I feel a need to I would probably lay a small rock or brick down there.

I don't think any metal pot could get hot enough to damage springs as long as it had water in it.

I luck out by working in a fab shop. I can have the boys of the floor make me steel pots of any size for next to nothing. 1/4'' thick. They work really well.
