How many people use beaver oil, in their castor based beaver lures. I am looking for everyones answer, paul, bob j, asa, tim caven, possum, tom olson, and everyone else I am forgetting. I know it has been hashed over a lot. I am just trying to see exactly what lures have oil in them. I would like to do a comparison, so if you know for sure of a lure that does or does not have oil, please chime in. Thanks WTA

I do it both ways ... some with some without

I actually use more beaver oil in predator baits than beaver lures! lol \:\)

This will be interesting ...

I use it in my own castor based beaver blend and it has dramatically increased catches. I also use it straight on trap shy beaver and it is sometimes the magic that it takes on the smart ones.

I remember one video of the legend (Boss's pa) where he just used a little sac oil separately for an educated beaver - no castor - I believe this is the same as TastesLikeChicken says. I mix some oil/castor and keep some separate.

I do not use it in my formulations for beaver at the present. I use it typically as an ingredient in other formulations.Being a very subtle odor as it is,beaver oil if and when used in a beaver formulation may not be detectable if sufficient amounts are not used and when the primary base is pure castor or a high percentage of castor. Each has his own reasons or a just because scenario.

There are numerous ways to formulate with or without oil. All I am sure will be productive to a degree, but some may outshine others depending on circumstances and time of year responses.

I prefer to keep beaver sac oil as a separate entity and use as needed or one can mix it with other ingredients to reach a specific goal in a product.

I use sac oil spareingly, and by itself, i.e. not mixed with castor.
Sac oil can be a good change-up for dirt holes, etc. Squeeze all the oil out. Let the oil sacs semi-dry, and use as you would bait.
BTW, don't try storing sac oil, sacs or oil in plastic. Plastic is too pourous to hold the odor, and you'll wind-up contaminating everything. Freezing in plastic doesn't help much either. Use glass.
Not implying that sac oil smells bad as do some other things, but it LASTs. Hard to wash off or otherwise remove. I usually wear it a few days.
Later,
45/70,

I do, 1 fl oz sac oil to 1 qt dried ground beaver castor + enough glycerine to make it a wet paste..

I use it in the formulation of my beaver lure but can't prove that it helps any. It sure doesn't seem to hurt and I will use a little bit by itself on castor-shy beaver. Personally, I would much rather sniff pure castor than the sac oil.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
