I have heard that if you bury a whole skunk and just leave the end of the tail above ground then set it like a flat set can be very productive I have never tried it but read it in one of Gilsviks books.

You cant beat a skunk carcas for yote fox and cats. I have never ground one up. I have to many running around here to worry about running short on carcases. But i would venture to say they would make a great bait ground up and a little beaver castor mixed in. Killer cat bait.

Chunk bait made from skunk or feral cat carcasses is difficult to beat for canines. I have never grounded it up - just cut up flesh into 1"-2" pieces. There are a few different ways (recipes/formulas) as to how to put this, or any chunk bait "up" for that matter. Try the archives for bait making.

Jonathan

Take a skunk and cut the scent glands off put them in the bottom of a clean gallon jar,cut the tail, feet, head off and gut it,then cut it into chunks.Put the lid on lose so the gases can escape and let it set until the meat falls off the bone, strain and use as a liquid bait. For the meat to fall off the bone it might take a year or so.To keep the flies from blowing it I take a 5 gallon bucket drill a1/4 in.hole through the lid and duct tape a doule piece of t-shirt over the hole to let the gases escape and set the gallon jar inside the bucket and close the lid.

Looks like its about dinner time possum skinner.I can almost smell the aroma now.

Of course I might have a difficult time since I have had my nose stuck over some several different batches of things in the last few days. I need to get away from it all for a few hours and let my olfactory senses cleanse themselves back to normal ( If that is possible) before I get back at odor sampling once again.

I take all my skunk carcas' after I remove the glands and gut then and put them in a 5 gallon bucket, heads and all. I skin all skunks with the feet on the pelt, so there is no fur in the bucket. Depending on the size, you can put 8-10 in there. Fill about 3/4 full. I leave them in there about 3 years stiring once or twice a year. Now what does this make? I use it as a lure base for fox and coyotes scent but can be used straight. Strain the bones out and dig a deep hole with a post hole digger about 3 ft deep and toss them in. Then cover with some of the dirt you dug out. Can't tell you how many coyotes I caught at that straight down hole set and rotted skunk.
