Muktuk is pretty good stuff...a little more course than Mungduk
I pickled some and that was good...raw and frozen is how I eat it mostly, and the Bowhead can be a bit chewy smile

I was treated to some of this once, years ago, by my friend from Savoonga. I discovered that I would need to be very hungry and possibly very cold in order to be able to eat this!

I am only lucky enough to get some from up north once in a blue moon myself..eat alot of Beluga and like that..
this came from Wainright...through my bro in law down river....he traded it for moose meat, and turned me on to some..

and Hup.....the skin and fat are eaten trimmed about that thick...(the fat is much thicker)
didnt get any of the meat...beluga is good though and taste kind of like seal smile

Does anyone know what caused the Bison herd in GMU 11 to have a massive die off back in 2004 ? Was it weather or Bear/ Wolf related?

Why do you ask this CB?

When you say massive I think that you should realize the highest count ever for the Copper River herd prior to 2004 was only 119 in 1970. So when you say massive you should understand it's not like 10s of thousands of animals.

martenpine:

I happened to be reading the ADFG hunting regs, and noticed there is Bison hunting Alaska. With all the talk about Musk Ox hunting, I have not heard anyone on here talk about hunting Bison. So, I checked up on the Alaskan Bison , and there was a mention of the die off of one of the herds back in 2004. Got me wondering what caused it.

Closest thing I ever had to "Mungduk" was Peking duck. Didn't much care for that, either.

Just doing what I want now.

Now, It probably won't work in Bethel or other areas where forest products are few and far between, but what the heck, give it a try !! grin
