Asafoetida tincture liqued.

1.Is it used for both lure and bait?

2.How do you use it?

3.Why do you use it?

4.What does it do?

I have seen alot of lure recipes calling for the use of Asafoetida and was wondering what its purpose was and how you use it. I checked the archives and didn't find the answers I was looking for. Thanks.

Yes, asafoedita is an excellent ingrredient for formulation in both lures and baits. Just as a rule of thumb an ounce of powder (straight or tinctured)is enough for a gallon of lure/bait base. It will continue to permeate the base while ageing so its easy to get too much into the formula in the beginning when formulating by nose. Asafoedita as a canine attractor goes way back into the 1800's and may have been the first ingredient added to bait to make it a lure. In the book by trap manufacturer Sewell Newhouse he tells how early wolf trappers smeared asafoedita gum on the trees and that it would bring in wolf packs for miles. Being just a plant product from India, i'm not sure exactly what the attraction is but it is said that asafoedita is a passion ingredient. It was a common practice with the old time Michigan wolfers to treat their baits with asafoedita, beaver castor and honey. Ace

Thanks Asa. At what stage in the aging process would you add Asafoedita to bait or lure?

When the bait or lure base left fresh or tainted where one desires it to be, add the preservative and any ingredient, mix well and let age in a cool dark place until usage. The longer the ageing process the better as time allows the asafoedita and other ingredients in the formulation to mix together and permeate the meat cubes or entire base rather than one dominating odor hitting one in the nostrils when the open the jar lid. Asa, is that the same stuff that is said to inhance the smell of beaver castor? I heard lovage oil will inhance the smell of beaver castor also. If they do when would you add it to the castor before or after grinding? Amount say for a gallon of castor?

Hmmmmm Coongrease, i'm not sure about asafoedita enhancing castor. Asafoedita is a stinky odor like a cousin to garlic. Anise oil and tonquin musk enhance castor and I expect lovage would too because they are all along the same sweet smelling lines. Anyway, all ingredients would be added after grinding the castor. As I mentioned above, asafoedita is a very permeating odor once it is aged and castor is the same way, mild at first but will take over an entire batch of lure if too much is added. As a rule of thumb, just guessing from experience, however much castor I was adding to a formula I would add at the ratio of about 1/2 the amount of asafoedita powder. Also, as I already mentioned the old bounty wolfers from my area all used a gallon of tainted ground venison or tainted fish base with about 4 ozs of castor, 2 ozs of asafoedita gum and a hint of something sweet such as honey or anise oil. Again, I don't know if that was for enhancement purposes or just a good simple formula. Ace

Thanks for the detailed explanations Asa. Asa, your brochure came in the mail today, thanks. I was not aware that you sold coyote and fox urine. I was looking for an another urine to use besides the one that I have been using. Looks like I found it. Thanks again.
