I cant stand a dull anything. Your more bound to fight the pelt and cut it using dull knife I have cut myself many times doing fur work everytime it has been with a dull knife your more apt to slip and cut yourslef and the fur. Sharp knife means less work on you part as well no more sawwing on it just touch and cut.

I could shave with my Sheffield, you will have more time in the neck area of a coon than the rest of the hide if you do not have a very sharp knife. I like to sharpen one side of the the knife razor sharp and keep the middle a bit duller to push fat, use the side for the the neck and the middle for the rest. Just an idea, and it works well for me.

I like a real sharp edge, just make sure there isn't any burs, knicks, or slivers of wood on your fleshing beam. It took me a few holes in some pelts to teach me to inspect my beams surface constantly...

I have switched from a necker to a Post fleshing knife, one of the best moves I have made. It holds and extremely sharp edge and is great for coon and the dull side pushes fat and does the majority of the work on cats, coyotes etc...Tom

For coon I Go from a knife sharp knife on the neck To just below the front arm pits. then I switch to a dull knife to put the fat off. Got to be careful thought with that sharp knife. IT can make a mess of coons hide.

When using the sharp side of the knife, you do not push. You hold the knife at an angle and cut the grizzle off of the back of the neck.
