Its hard to explain, if you look at an animals mouth, you have the inner part inside the mouth and the outer, the hair, basicly what you are doing its skinning between the inner and out of the mouth, and you do it all the way to where the hair meets the skin part of the lips, that way you can get it dried so the hair doesn't slip, and it gives the taxidermist the lips to be able to tuck for mounts.
Does this help at all?

I will be doing a bobcat and I will try to get some pictures for you, I'm going to skin it as if it was going to be mounted, going to split the nose and split the lips and everything.
Basicly the inner and outter lip is stuck together, and when you split them you are just going between the inner and outter to get them apart so that you can get the roots of the hair dried.

It is mostly done with pelts which will be mounted for taxidermy. I do it to all my otter and mink, would do it if I caught fisher, skunk, or marten as well. So your answer is no. ive been wondering about that do you need to do that on putting ur oen fur up wanted to start but didnot know how far u typicaly go with this i know what your are talking about for spliting the nose and lips but to just soft tan hides is that step needed
