here is a mod i am considering doing to all my homemade dp's. if any of you who use dp's on a regular basis knows once freezing weather arrives things can get ugly. this simple mod could be done to almost any commercial or homemade dp. i have caught several animals in this trap/setup so far this year.

this first pic shows the trap in the set position.

this pics shows a catch and if you look you can see the top of the stake where the trap sits.

on this pic you can see the "receiver" welded to the back of the trap. it is plugged with mud, but cleans out easily. if the ground is frozen, plugging will not be a problem.

The main problem in freezing temps is not getting the trap to go into the ground, it is getting the trap to release from the ground after the coon is caught.
Like Ack said, ifin you trap many coon when the temps get down into thelower 20 s and below, you have a major problem.
67 I know that you must trap coon when it gets extremly cold, don't you have problems with the DP freezing into the ground?
I also made some holders for frozen ground, but they were different than the ones shown.
Ack what I wonder about having a single post for a receiver, is, don't you have trouble with the coon wanting to turn the trap in circles.
Now if I was still working in the tool and die bussiness, I would make me a post and receiver with a flat on both pieces or a flat on the stake part on the trap and a couple set screws in the receiver part that are screwed in far enough that the post won't revolve but you also don't have to adjust the set screw all the time .
Do I make myself clear as mud?

Just setting here thinking about the hitch and receiver thing on the grizz trap.
You could use square tubing that one would just slide inside another one and that could stop the turning of the trap on the hitch. But maybe you already have that part figured out.

no don i have not noticed a problem with the trap spinning. i suppose if it was a problem the piece of tubing could be cut at a 45 degree angle with a matching piece welded to the stake. i have made a couple with a straight shaft on the back and yes don, they freeze in hard enough to cause MAJOR problems. i even tried welding a piece of brake tubing to the side then twisting a piece of 11 gauge wire to the top of the stake. it worked but i like the conduit much better. i would not have posted pics if i wasn't confident in its function. it is a simple mod that can be done to any dp on the market.

one observation - i have not noticed the trap pointing another direction without a catch.

Ack I think you have a wondefull idea for the grizz anchor or for any other DP trap. Please understand that all I was doing is wondering more or less. You see I have also had the major freeze problem and made some of my own mounts, but I like the simplicity of yours much better.
Heck I just had to ask the questions, bec ause I know coons can be a problem if the DP traps are not anchored down good.
I never did think , like other fellas have posted, that you could just throw one on the ground and catch coon. I suppose you might catch a few that away, but I want more than a few.
I fish a pretty goodly amt. of grizz traps and like the way they operate, but the only big downfall, and it ain't the biggest problem in the world, is, in soft ground, I have to run X stakes through the v bar to anchor the trap and even then, they will upon occassion get knocked down.
Like I said, your invention is fantastic.

thanks guys! i am posting this idea to help others who are concerned with freezing conditions and dp's. i have tried other mods but this one seems like its the best so far and the easiest to do.

I have had good luck using a 1\2 inch rebar stake with a washer welded on the top. Take your stake and leave about 4 inches sticking out of the ground, now take the little grizz and facing the trigger toward the stake hook the gap between the base of the trap and the spring bracket on the washer then you can use a rubber band, a small zip tie or a piece of bike intertube cut into a rubber band, to put around the stake and the anchor support.
