Got your attention now! The Minnesota DNR is catching alot of flak on this and people with dogs want the 220's Banned on land. So there goes the snaring on land also. There are DNR input meetings set up to here our opinions on this. To find a input meeting near you go to the MN DNR website under news releases and you will find the dates and places where they are being held. So get off your duff and voice your opinion, otherwise the DNR will listen to the ALMIGHTY WEEKEND WARRIOR BIRDHUNTER and they will get their way. Its time to act NOW! Later D.C. This was Posted in Feb, 2007 so don't get nervous!

I wish a few people would be more careful when setting 220's

Our problems generally come from bad location choice. Lots of new trappers out there due to the price forecast. A couple of old bone heads too.

Educate others for our own good. Please!

Any location that could remotely possibly catch a pet should be avoided like the plague. even if the pet doesn't belong there.

You can catch the same target animal farther from the road, trail or culvert.

pets won't go into the traps if people would use fruits instead of meats.

My guess would be cubbies with a fishy lure or meaty lure for coons and bobcat. Dogs sometimes stick their heads in there. Coyotes typically won't, being suspicious, but dogs don't have that suspicious nature.

I live on the Leach Lake Indian Reservation, and I have found several 330's on dry land. When I questioned my local C.O. on this he stated the traps belonged to Natives, whom can legally set 330's on dry land also within small game refuges. Where I am not allowed to trap.

I agree that many new trappers and even some older ones pick bad locations and give the coni a bad name...220s are needed on land in the right locations...its all about becoming aware of your surroundings and knowing where and where not to set.

I for one use alot of coni's and i have never caught a dog in one or a fox(red or grey)coyote; so where is this dog coming in at in a 220? sounds fishy to me. but yes the meetings are nice to go too; but the problem is;THEY DO AS THEY WANT NOMATTER WHAT HAPPENS.
CAN'T EVER REMEMBER OF HEARING FROM A COON HUNTER , MY DOG GOT CAUGHT IN A CONI.
trappers revise arround all the laws by late seasons for trapping---maybe they need a law-------during trapping seasons-----all dogs in the woods on leashes within control of the hunters.
hunters know when trapping season starts, traps are out there to beware of them.
Its all getting sicking------------MAYBE WE SHOULD JUST BAN-(HUNTING-FISHING-TRAPPING AND EVERYTHING)
WE AS TRAPPERS HAVE A RIGHT AS ANYONE OUTTHERE; SO LETS GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF!
WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER OR NOTHING COMES OUT OF IT!

I've had a fear of this.
I'll keep this in my prayers. I'm sure everything will go fine. As long as the MN DNR isn't filled up with antis like in Cali or IN you'll be fine.

God is awesome

Is there anything people can do to help you guys out! I'm moving to Minnesota in the spring so this would affect me also in the future. Onevery big reason for me moving there are the trapping rights, Ban on Lynx in the northeast But I can deal with that!

Take a look at New York State. We have the same problems with thoughtless use of conibears on land for coon etc. NYSTA worked with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Bureau of Wildlife and had regulations put in place to allow continued use of conibears
Go to http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45819.html It seems to be working. We are also trying to educate our trappers to be aware of the increased presence of other users on public lands.

Problem here is there is alot of "road trappers"Almost every bridge has a bucket set or a conibear set! I think if anything to cure this is banned right of way trapping by the roads, conibear use on private land only,I was deer hunting last week and stop to look at a deer ,just happen to look in the ditch, there was a 220 set on a trail and 15 ft from road! and no proper ID.tag!

I agree too many careless trappers out there that will ruin our good sport for everyone.
The NYC website link has it right, those trap setting techniques will help.
In Ontario it is free game you can set traps anyway you want legally up to 8 inches on land.
But ethically, you want to think a little bit better how you will do it safely.
All these different set ups will help with Dogs being prevented from going in a trap, but a domestic cat will get in no matter what, and they have microchips on them.
