I noticed a few days ago that someone said not to use borax on your pelts to help dry/preserve them, because it caused problems with tanning the hides.i cant remember the post or i would post this there.

Ive always used it and never had any problems with my grades. It seems to really help. Also the Nafa fur handling book recomends it.

Just wanted to say this for anyone considering using this.

There is nothing wrong with using borax. I use it all the time, especially on coyotes.
One thing it is very useful for, is finishing work. Once I have a yote dried, and off the board (same with fox or any other long hair fur out type)I'll lay the pelt in a shallow "trough" and pour borax on the fur. I will then rub it back and forth into the fur and give it a good brushing.
Shake it out, and you have a very nice, very fluffy coyote, it even makes our easterns look good.

A "half truth" is still a whole lie.

I use it to help mine along a little. Mostly under the legs and around the head.

Is there a difference between land animals and water animals for using borax maybe ok for land animals and not for water ?

someone just shared their opinion when they said not to use borax on your pelts

heck, I use borax all the time ... I dust my fox with it and board them fur in (just slipped on a board no pins for a few minutes maybe 30 , no set time) ... get all my boards full, look them over making sure they all got a good even coat/dusting of borax and plenty on the ears then turn them fur out put on boards and pin 'em ... they do just fine boraxing and boarding

and like said above it can really make a finished pelt look extra good when worked through the fur and combed/blown out

Do what you want, butI would not put borax on a pelt that is going to be sold skin side out. Like rats , coon, beaver, mink etc.
I do use a little under the front legs on yotes and fox. It actually might cause a buyer to downgrade a coon or beaver or what ever. I don't want to see it on furs that are stretched skin side out.
If you handle your skin side out critters in the correct manner, then you do not need borax on the skin.
