When you flesh a skunk do you go all the way down to the white like on a coon? You are not suppose to leave the "saddle" are you? Also is fleshing a skunk as much work as a coon?

Any help or pics would really be appreciated!

Greg, the one that does the NAFA demo uses a sharp fillet or similar knife and starts from the bottom, I just modified his technique and use a sharp fleshing knife. Figured I should give ole Greg credit...he has been a wealth of information and laughs to a lot of trappers, new and old. Tom

Fleshing a skunk is more easy than a coon, tail is non issue with back side of sharp flesher.

If you have a mixed bag catch, start with your easiest to flesh critter: fox, skunk, etc... and then work on your coon, beaver, etc....

If I start the other way around, I tend to be waaayyyy too aggressive and heavy with the knife on the easily torn pelts.

Hope that helps!

S/F,

Bob

I am looking for a picture of a properly finished skunk. Is there anyone out there that has a picture? I am trying to figure out if the one I finished is right. I want to make sure I am not over scraping! Thanks.

This is the only skunk I've ever fleshed. Like a few people above have posted, the tail gave me trouble. I'm going to try fleshing the next one like tom suggested above. Here's a couple of pics with a few coons:

KCTRAPPER You are the man that is exactly what I was looking for I really appreciate it!! I was worried that I scraped them too much, but mine look just like the one in your pic. The tail thing I also found out. I didn't rip it off but,did get a little tear.

Thanks Again!!!
