I think a wire brush and then squirt some oil on it and get to sharpening.

Won't a magnet lift the metal out of the stone?
I have nothing clever to put here.

We used to Fry them in the restaurant. We would wait until the fry oil had started to break down, and when we would heat the oil up to drain and clean the fryer, we would drop the stone into it for a few min. The oil would boil out the metal shavings, and prep the stone at the same time. And then we would empty the fryer of the old grease, Boil it out with a cleaner and water, Drain, rinse, and refill with new oil.
I have also boiled them out with water and a bit of dish soap. a Word of caution. BE VERY careful when handling a Hot stone. They will be VERY brittle so if you bump it or drop it, it will probably shatter. LOL> Same Idea with the dishwasher. which will also work.

See, I don't ever put water on mine. It's not a wetstone, mine's a whetstone, maybe the same thing? I only use oil. when it gets dirty we use kerosene.

Plain soap and water, use a good grade of light viscosity oil (3in1 etc) while using the WHETstone.
