330, What type of pipe do you use for the locks, plumbers pipe? Suppose conduit would be to soft? Also, I assume that you point the long end of the lock pointing to the water, and the flat side is the one that binds when the beaver comes back, right? Thanks

I just used a piece of plumbers pipe and cut them with my Saws-all ... had to use the cobalt drill bits to make the hole for the j-hook. Yes the pointed end slides downward toward the deep-dark water...
2-poor, The chain is plenty short to keep the beaver deep, but I like to have everything made so that I can just fix it, or change it out right by the pond in the field... so I use links...
The main reason I went to chain is because the lengths can be adjusted from 10' on down by using whatever link you want... with the cable the trap had to stay on the slide the way it was built... plus the chain locks up and holds the beaver down even if the drowner chain is loose or saggy.
Try the pipe locks, they work like a charm and are almost free to build.

The Pipe locks are Free, easy to make and lock up tight on each link being pulled against with #3 straight link... Different locks made differently might be able to slip backwards ? I don't know because I haven't used other locks.

The big thing with straight link is the bottom of your lock better be shorter than a link of your chain, else the beaver could bring it back up. I've used my set up for quite awhile and have never had a beaver hang up on the way down.

I have used both and prefer the twist link myself. I would much rather save the straight link chain for K-9 traps. I can not recall having a Beaver hang up on the twist link chain. I know they would have one heck of a time reversing back up the chain.
By fastening my MB-750 right to the lock in Tim Bauers picture with a swivel I keep the chain very short. I can slide that lock over my drowning rod or use it on a drowning chain. No need to ever change anything out! All of my Beaver traps have the lock permanetly fastened.
Very nice pictures Tim. Tough to beat those tie plates for a weight !

Variables, and choices make differences on the line. That's why we all feel our set up is the "Best" our own experience leads us to feel proud of our equiptment, especially if it is made well in ones own shop.

My locks will not back up on any chain. The point here is that chain drowners ,who ever makes them ,are the best reuseable drowning systems around, and one of the best investment a water trapper can make; Buy them or make your own youll never go back.
