I just got off the phone with Kellin Kaatz about a question I had on lure making and the use of SB and he told me something I never new. Which I don't know a whole [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot] of alot anyway but, that SB will change the pallet ability of a lure.

He said that if used to much it would cause the lure to taste like soap and recommended using glycerin to use along with SB to help preserve so the one wouldn't have to use as much SB.

I thought it would kool and informative if I put the same question out to you all and ask" How much SB/glycerin do you use on say a Gallon of product being bait or lure?"

Thanx HB Ken

Well said upstateNY!
95% of all the animals I harvest never had a chance to taste any lure.
Also, I'll question that sodium benzonate tastes like soap, it is food grade stuff for human consumption and is the preservative in many foods we eat. I think he may have confused SB with 20 Mule team Borax!
Depending upon how cold of temeperatures one has in thier region it takes up to one pint of glycerine per gallon of bait/lure/urine to anti-freeze it. Asa

often you hear of folks mislead to believe that glycerine is a preservative ... I think it's that the thick, heavy, syrupy consistency of glycerine that's coating the surfaces of whatever you're applying it to, is somewhat sealing it ... thus slowing the rate of decomposition due to lack of exposure to air/oxygen ... giving the false illusion of it being a preservative smile

agreed, no soapy taste associated with SB ... most likely confused with borax

in bait the amount of glycerine will vary, usually I am going for a particular consistency and moderate "freeze proofing" ... I do feel you can add too much, somewhat muting the odor/lift ... the same goes for over use of sodium benzoate ... these are just my thoughts based on my own observations and experiences grin

IMO, I agree with ASA and Possum Skinner. But most of the time I'm told my opinion don't count for nothing! LMAO

I do vary the amounts of glycerine as PS stated for consistency in a formulation. And as ASA stated up to 1 pint to a gallon of bait/lure/urine for use to anti-freeze it.

One other thing that glycerine does, is that it takes on the smell of whatever it is you put it on. Let me try to explane somewhat.

If you want to anti-freeze urine that is strong like bobcat or something, pour your glycerine into a measuring cup first. If you just open a bottle of glycerine and pour it into your bowl or jar of urine or whatever your pouring it onto, the next time you open that bottle of glycerine you may smell the urine or whatever you poured it on. Measure your glycerine first and then close the lid on your bottle of glycerine. I work with skunk alot and if you have an open bottle of glycerine around it will pick up that smell. And by the way SB does not taste like soap.

Sodium Benzoate is actually sweet to the taste not soapy as I have tasted it many times. The air borne particulate that puffs up when I add some to a batch of lure or bait when I turn on my 60 qt. Hobart commercial mixer some of the fine material gets tossed into the air.Never heard that said before about tasteing like soap and I use 3-400 pounds a season for formulation work and other materials that preserve.
Zinc Valerate is pungent to smell and not very palatable.

Zinc Valerate = A very concentrated lure and bait preservative ( Use aprox. 1 oz.. per gallon of lure / bait) Dissolve well prior to use for better product contact.
