I'm going to try to tincture some fresh castor. Are there any "rules" I need to follow? I'm going to use vodka since I can't get everclear here. How much should I use and how long do I leave it soak? Would glycerin be a tincturing agent? Thanks for the help.

There is no set time but generally speaking it takes a couple of months to get a good strong castor odor. What I have done is to use the vodka bottle to mix the vodka and castor or whatever and then place the bottle at a location that I pass regularly so I can give it a good shaking every time I pass. Good luck! Asa

No glycerin is not a tincturing agent. It will take on the smell of whatever your wanting to tincture, but it will not pull the essence out of the product. If you want the full potential from your product use vodka or pga. You can always add glycern after that if your going to make up your own lure.

"Would glycerin be a tincturing agent?"

No, glycern is another poor tincturing choice.

Would a tincturing agent be the same as a solvent? Yes and No maybe Mr Jameson can better explain it than I can. But here goes,
Yes sorta if you use vodka or pga.

There are many other so called solvents. I call a solvent something that extracts the essence that I'm after. You can tincture (if you want to call it that)with glycol or glycern but it takes a very long time and will not last long where as a true tincture using vodka or pga will last a very long time.

A true solvent will destroy some compounds in chemicals that are in the makeup of the product you are trying to extract.

Since you are trying to extract the essence of beaver caster, I would use vodka or pga and that would be all you need to have a fine extract. You can make a strong or weaker extract by the amount of vodka or pga that you use.

I would think, on the whole, trappers would be more interested in what lpga is going to put out than pga.

I guess I should have said EVERCLEAR instead, as that's what most trappers know it as.

Perhaps someone like to comment on the efficacy of tincturing "fresh castor" in EVERCLEAR?

Mr High Noon I ,m sorry wasn,t really asking this just quoting the question to ask about the solvent part

Would a tincturing agent be the same as a solvent? Yes and No maybe Mr Jameson can better explain it than I can. But here goes,

PGA being perfumers grade alchohol ?

Again sorry I did not make myself clearer I,m just learning for future reference I don,t have any beaver near me yet but thank you explaining all that you did. Everclear thats alot like "shine" eh?? smile

aprophet, you said the glycol took longer and didn't last as long, that being said propylene glycol is not as good to use? I wouldn't want to make somthing that didn't work or last.

Mr. Bad Karma,

When Jan Stephenson was firing a desire to perfect tinctures and infusions the current wife-studies-project was pre-pubescent. I was unknown to her and her family, and they to me. Twas Only a nightmare that her Mother hoped wouldn’t happen.
