I've made several and a buddy has made a bunch. Both chain and hook gambrels are fairly easy to make. I personnaly don't like the chain ones.

Yep.It's not that pretty but it'll hold anything and I can adjust the width of the hanging points if I need to.No welding and it was cheap to make.

Made 1 similar to ATL's. get some 3/8" thick flat stock about 1 1/4" wide. Drill holes on it to what ever width you want and chain from sides to a pivot point. Get some good heavy S hooks with cable slides like his and good to go. I got a boat winch with some 1/8 " cable to raise and low the carcass works well.

I got a peice of Flat steel 12 inches long 3 inches wide. I then welded the U part from a muffler clamp on top. Then welded 2 dog choke collars on each end loop and hang good rig for me.

Thanks.I like it cause it all just bolts together so anyone could make it.I have access to a welder just not at my house.I actually have it double nutted above and below the frame in the center so it swivels.I do pullups on it to get warmed up for skinning. smile

Sounds cool - I've got some of that same material. May make me one too.

Here is another varation of a gambrel that I use. Just drop the leg in the V and the ankle wont pull through. It will hold with or without tendons. The skin is held down with a cam action lock. Just drop the hide through and pull. The harder you pull the tighter it clamps.

No machine shop, just like to build things.
The cams are 1 1/4 pipe that pivot on 1/2 a rod welded to the outside to create the cams. The two gears keep the cams in time so they roll up even. (The gears are two old weld-a-sprockets that I ground the teeth down to act like gears.) I have added a foot peddle to open and a pull spring to close the cams to speed up every thing by keeping my hands free.
