Back befor the crash there was a good thread like this one in the archives. Let's build another one for future referance!

How do you use your carcases, scrapings, ect?

Here goes:

One of my favorite uses for fat scrapings (coon and beaver) is to form the fat into blocks/squares about 4 1/2" X 4 1/2" X 2" thick. These are then rolled/covered in bird seed and used to feed the birds in winter.

The birds love them! They last a long time so there's usually more than the birds here in the yard can eat on. The excess ones are given away to my grandparents, friends, neighbors, anybody else I know that feeds birds. If I still have leftovers they're hung up in trees in the woods.

So, how do you make use of your carcases, scrapings, ect?

Coon fat is good for heating the fur shed. If you have a wood stove, you can add small amounts of fat and really heat up an area.
Cautioin: Coon fat can will melt a wood stove (from the intense heat so use with caution).

That's very cool! Never heard of that! Have to give it a try sometime \:\)

For those where it's legal to do, there is a market for skulls and bones too. Just gotta do some asking around and find a buyer.

I have my own skull collection that's always a hit whenever folks come over. I just chop off the carcass heads, put them in a wire cage that's big enough for mice/weasels to get into, and between them and the bugs in the summer a guy has a really nice cleaned up skull usually by mid summer.

I separate the fleshy portions of my beaver scraps for weasel bait. Weasel really seem to like it.

I also have several friends who take my beaver carcasses for bear bait. The other carcasses I burn in my outside woodboiler stove. With all the fat, coon carcasses really do stoke up a hot fire.

Right on Trapper7. Weasels love that stuff. The fatty part of the beaver scrapings don't seem to freeze either.

GoneTrappin, I do that abit too. It's nice to feed the critters and feathered friends. Think they really appreciate it in the winter. \:\) When the weather gets nasty it's cool to go check out the tracks in the snow leading up to the pile...gives a guy an idea of what's all around.

Nothing in nature ever goes to waste! \:\)

suredave, some posablities would be private sales to individuales, maybe a local college or highschool science/biology class, or donating them to wildlife education centers. Just be sure to check your regulations. It's not always legal to sell that sort of stuff in some areas.

Muskrat carcases! Half a muskrat in a cubbyset/bucketset or pocket set will catch mink, coons, and other muskrats. They'll catch about anything, really.

suredv, you can sell skulls to skullsunlimited.com. I have sold some to them in the past, but was not real excited about the way you send them critters only to have them change the quoted price or say the skull was damaged. I quit sending them skulls. But, that's just my opinion based on my experience with them.

I have farmer friend who has a pile of stumps in his field about 300 yards from his house. He always asks me to dump some carcasses there for the coyotes. He has a nice shot from his porch with his 22-250.

Bear bait.
Coyote bait for night hunting. They'll eat about anything in late winter.

Beaver & deer for marten, fisher, fox, coyote.
Coon is a great fisher bait.
Skunk fat is used as a base for some fox scent and also was used for alot of medical uses up until recent times.
Skunk & coon grease is good for leather and my grandfather used it on steel at his forge to keep it from rusting. Said it worked better than petroleum greases and wasn't as messy.
