I have a taxidermist friend who uses a pressure wahser to flesh hides. Takes about five minutes to do a deer cape. He learned from a woman taxidermist in WI. She uses it on evrything including Bear.
He uses a big spring clamp to hold it on a board. Hold it on one spot until the fat starts to roll. Keep the roll moving just like with a knife. No sharp edge to cut thru the hide.
I'm posting this for discussion only as I have not tried it myself yet.
He gave me a roadkill coon the he fleshed this way. I don't know how old it was or how long he waited to skin it. When I thawed it it was smelly and the fur was slipping. However the pelt was 90 percent clean. He doesn't put up fur for sale. He tans his own hides and fleshes tanned hides with a wire wheel and a fleshing wheel.
Has anyone ever tried this?

Seems like your pelts will get wet, and make quite the mess. I probably would only try it on coon and beaver.

Getting the pelt wet is irrelevant, but using a washer would take all the greasey fun out of doing it the normal way!

I've also heard of Taxidermist using pressure washers to flesh animals.

I have heard of people doing this. I have been told it works good but is very messy. You have to check the fur after to make sure you got it all.

My Tannery uses a pressure washer to flesh hides. Works like a champ. I have seen it done on just about everything. Makes short work of some of that african junk than comes in.

Makes short work of just about any hide. Especially Bear. They dry out faster to after salting because a lot of the fat and oil in the skin is removed.

You would have to be a little more careful with Fox, coon and cat. Though Beaver wouldn't be that hard. You could have one of those done in about 3 minutes.

Does sound like a good idea. I'd imagine going woth a green or white tip should be pretty safe.

How much pressure do you think would be appropriate?

If you have a well no big deal. Not quite sure on pressure. If I need to flesh anything with the pressure washer I usually just use theirs and it is already set. i could probably get some info on what they use for their small animals.

Car wash isn't close to strong enough.

My washer's 3000 psi. I think I'm gonna try some coon first.

Thanks for the great idea.

Beaver in 3 minutes! Maybe for someone experienced but, I just watched my trapping partner try fleshing a average size beaver with a pressure washer this past weekend. It took well over an hour and it was a wet and fatty mess. I stood about 12' behind him and I still got some fat on me. We had been reading up on this for quite some time now. It isn't as easy as it seems and its very, very, very, messy! He wasn't able to get all the gizzle off the back end of the beaver. I do believe a coon would be a lot easier to do though. The demo I watched on the net about it the guy who posted it said he does everything from rabbit to bear with his pressure washer. I'm sure its like everything else out there which is there's a right way to do it and a wrong way....I'm sure we done it the wrong way.
Mark
