On the same visual principle, I have used halves of chicken egg shells as an attractant for both raccoon and red fox for many years. The "cup" in them also serves as a lure holder in a dirt hole set.
I have yet to meet a raccoon that will pass up an "egg" if it has an opportunity to see it, as two of you have noted with the golf and ping pong ball versions.
Neat idea, and obviously more durable than my chicken halves in the long haul. But, my 5 gallon bucket full of shells will last a long time.

I retrieved golf balls from golf course lakes for a living(9 Years). We used to hate getting into a lake with alot of muskrats because they'll chew golfballs down to half their original size.

I use the plastic easter eggs. I get them at Wally world right after easter. They are hinged and have two small holes in each end. I use them in cubbies for skunk and coon.
