No real trick to it . I bait the box or bucket and put some good coon lure on a stick and throw it under the set .I also tried the running pole with no luck at all . The 5" of the ground set works fine for me . We have about 18 coons so far in those sets . We didn't get set up until around the middle of Nov. I have never caught a bobcat in one of those sets . I use other sets for cats

I set the box or bucket on a level surface . I don't set where there is no trees . I use a lot of beaver meat for bait . Any kind of a good smelling lure seems to work . Snares for cats

Mark , If the ground is soft enough you could even use wooden fence posts . Not much trouble for a coon to get into the box or bucket . The buckets are lighter that the boxes . I use the 160's in the boxes .Made just for the 160's and The 220's fit nicely into a bucket ,

Tyler Irish- go to www.novascotinghunting.comThere is a trapping section, look through the 07 and 08 trapping thread theres lots of pictures there. Just make sure when you make the sets as perscribed for Nova Scotia that you follow the distance required. Foe example if you make a set 5 ft of the ground, and it snows, you either have to make the set higher, or shovel the snow away.

The biggest disadvantage with the cubby is that it takes too long to build . We have to have a 7"x 7" opening with the trap set back 7" from the opening . This is for the 160's and an 8"hight and a 10"width for the 220's with the trap set back 10" from the opening . That would be a lot of unnecessary work when you can gear up a bucket in jig time . I build some boxes during the summer as a passtime . Buckets will last a long time as will the boxes if they are taken in after the season and not left out to rot . Save yourself some time and efort and get some buckets . The square buckets will fit the 160's nicely as you have seen in an earlier post " Forget The Cubby "

On average how many ground level dog proof sets do people run or did run. Im just wondering how many refusals people actually got on thees type of sets, run all season or just early season or late season. It would just be easier and a bit more cost effective to get these buckets out than to backpack 6ft pickets and the boxes out to my line.
How did these sets rate on non-target catches; skunks, bobcats, mink.
Also as a side note I have put 12 of these sets out but they are now under about 6ft of water due to the rain and extremelly unusual flooding.
