Coyote snarer: Have you noticed any pros or cons to that setup VS the other dog-proof methods. Any tips or tricks to pass on about your setup.
Also how effective is the upside down box on bobcat.

No real trick to it . I bait the box or bucket and put some good coon lure on a stick and throw it under the set .I also tried the running pole with no luck at all . The 5" of the ground set works fine for me . We have about 18 coons so far in those sets . We didn't get set up until around the middle of Nov. I have never caught a bobcat in one of those sets . I use other sets for cats

How do you run your 5' off the ground sets (incline, bait/lure, etc). How do you go about setting areas with no trees, make a platform, or pass on location. and what type of sets do you run for bobcats, foothold, snare or another type of lethal set.

I set the box or bucket on a level surface . I don't set where there is no trees . I use a lot of beaver meat for bait . Any kind of a good smelling lure seems to work . Snares for cats

Hi Yote Snarer,

I made four of these type of boxes this year and will be trying them out in about a week. In all of the research I have looked at - they say that even a domestic cat has a very difficult time entering on of these vertical boxes set at 5-6 inches off the ground.

If there are no trees around, I imagine you could take a steel fence post, pound it in, and wire the box vertically to it at the proper height.

Mark

Mark , If the ground is soft enough you could even use wooden fence posts . Not much trouble for a coon to get into the box or bucket . The buckets are lighter that the boxes . I use the 160's in the boxes .Made just for the 160's and The 220's fit nicely into a bucket ,

Tyler Irish- go to www.novascotinghunting.com

There is a trapping section, look through the 07 and 08 trapping thread theres lots of pictures there.

Just make sure when you make the sets as perscribed for Nova Scotia that you follow the distance required. Foe example if you make a set 5 ft of the ground, and it snows, you either have to make the set higher, or shovel the snow away.

so from what most people have said nobody has put alot of faith in the dog proof cubby's, or is there still someone out there who has had some sort of success in the actual cubby.

The biggest disadvantage with the cubby is that it takes too long to build . We have to have a 7"x 7" opening with the trap set back 7" from the opening . This is for the 160's and an 8"hight and a 10"width for the 220's with the trap set back 10" from the opening . That would be a lot of unnecessary work when you can gear up a bucket in jig time . I build some boxes during the summer as a passtime . Buckets will last a long time as will the boxes if they are taken in after the season and not left out to rot . Save yourself some time and efort and get some buckets . The square buckets will fit the 160's nicely as you have seen in an earlier post " Forget The Cubby "

On average how many ground level dog proof sets do people run or did run. Im just wondering how many refusals people actually got on thees type of sets, run all season or just early season or late season. It would just be easier and a bit more cost effective to get these buckets out than to backpack 6ft pickets and the boxes out to my line.

How did these sets rate on non-target catches; skunks, bobcats, mink.

Also as a side note I have put 12 of these sets out but they are now under about 6ft of water due to the rain and extremelly unusual flooding.
