S hooks will work but I think the quick links are faster for changind out a snare after a catch, a pair of fence pliers are what I use for S hooks and J hooks.
I use the snap links to attach all my snares to cable stakes for the simple fact that it is alot easier and faster then changing them out then any other method. I use j-hooks right out of the swivel for all my cable stakes.

Be careful if you use S-hooks. If you bend them more than a time or two, the metal gets brittle and will possibly break-on-the-bend if pulled on right. They are just like re-using J-hooks, Be Safe and don't do it!
I've used the HD Split Rings with good results, but you must be careful where you use them too. They work good if you're hooking a trap up to a fence and catching Coons etc, but a Coytote on a solid stake/anchor CAN bend them up pretty bad. Possibly even escape because of the bent split ring. I haven't lost any yet, but there have been a couple that came pretty close to getting away.
So, I've gone started using the threaded Quick Links. Lots of sizes to choose from and they do work very well for those solidly staked units.

Use a swivle of some kind between the snare and stake. If you hook them solid they can unwind the cable and break it.
