I have tryed several different types and a bumber jack is the best.
cut a notch out of the foot so the cable will come straight up. Take a small piece of chain with a hook on it to hook the loop in the stake and come up to the hook on the jack.
jack it out of the ground.
Trust me once you use one made like this you will love it. extremely easy and fast.

I use 1/8 inch cable. it can take alot more stress than 3/32. I haven't seen any problems with it hurting the cable but it will sometimes pull out of the aluminum ferruls. Im switching to annealed 5/16 nuts hammered on now. they hold alot better.

If you can, leave them in the ground for next season. When I pull 'em I take along a section of heavier trap chain thats about 5 feet or so with an s-hook on the end. Attach the s-hook to the cable stake loop, get a good wrap around both hands with the opposite end of the chain, get a good footing, and then pull like a winch.
Remember to wear a heavy pair of work gloves and careful of the clay..

I was told to use a atv or truck. Hook it on a cable and on the stake and it should be out. But be carefull.

I've dug up quite a few in my day but that runs into to much work. at least with 18 inches of cable. with 12 inches like Mark uses its probably not as bad.

if you can find an old bumber jack somewhere(people will usually give them to ya) i highly suggest tryin it. Its the easiest way to pull them. except maybe with a truck or atv.

But honestly though i highly recomend anyone making one out of a bumber jack. Once you do you will throw rocks at all the other types of pullers out there. If anybody has any questions on how to make one just send me a PM and i'll explain how.
just imagine how easy it is to jack the back end of a cadillac up with one!!!!!

The best thing to do is to just grab hold of your trap by the jaws and pull!!.....j/k
I built one that is similar to the one pictured by ADC. made from thick walled square iron. I can't complain about the job it does and it does not weigh as much as a bumper jack if you should have to carry it a ways for one reason or another.

I made a 5' puller similar to the one ADC shows. In a hurry to pull one cold morning, jumped out of the truck and hooked up the puller. I gave a heave and now have 2 bulging discs in my back and numbness in my right arm, and that was over 3 months ago. Appt. w/ neurosurgeon Apr. 16th. The puller works great, just don't be stupid w/ it like I was...

A full sized pickax with a pointed end will pry many out, if not then the blade end will dig them pretty easy. The pickax is a very good time saving tool for making your trap bed too, not many wacks compared to those unhandy hammer type diggers.T.20

Heck, I like to go back in the spring and get em outta the ground after the spring thaw (if they weren't frozen in I pulled them already) and talk with the farmer or rancher... visit the old sets and pick up and recycle all the coyote poop from the ones I missed and my Brittany Pearl LOVES the adventure as I bring her along, and she can run and sniff and all the things that dogs love to do.
Or I bring along a helper!!!!! Hey Jim Bob, can you help me get these anchors out??? YOU BET I CAN MARK...gimme that shovel!

Charles. I rarely and I mean rarely use anything longer than 12" on my earth anchors. In MI and again out here in NE which is the worldest largest sand reserve (bigger than the Sahara Desert) has hard pan down 6 inches or so and that's all I need to get a solid hold. Every now and then on a gopher hole etc. I need 18". I have only lost 2 rigs in 23 years and they were both MY fault. I lost them on areas with holes that I hit as I pounded and I should have gone longer than 12 but didn't. My DVD has me using only 12" anchors in this country all day long!

Ah... I don't set the silty parts along creeks etc. and I know what you mean. I look for harder ground which always seems to present itself along the way. One of the rigs I lost many years ago was on a dike with really soft soil, I used a 18" and it rained hard and well I lost. Lesson learned though as I don't so that anymore. Most of KS is HARD! I've predator called a lot in your country and you just need to look around a bit.

i agree with you there Mark, if the ground is frozen i just leave them till the ground thaws out. i like going out on a nice sunny day and revisiting my set areas and seeing how many old sets have been dugout and pooped on and so forth. you would be suprised how many animals are still attracted to the bait and lure smells from months earlier. I've noticed some even turn into regular stops for fox and coyote. I got a couple of old sets not too far from the house that havent had a trap there since january but about every fourth or fifth day there is fresh tracks there regularly. they just keep scratchin at the old holes and leavin sign.

RCS are 20" I use a piece of #9 fence wire hooked in a 4"x1/2" pipe. 40 lb pull or less on the retrieve line gets most of them.
RCS 2000 lb hold less than 40 lb retrieve.
