I have looked through the archives and could not seem to find my answers.

1. What exactly does tincturing do ?

2. I know that alchol (drinking grade) is used to do this. Does the alchol evaporate during this process.

3. Is there a link or could you explain the ingredients along with the steps of the process?

Thanks ahead

the alcohol absorbs the scent of the tincturing material and expands it so you have more to use.

One covers the product to be tinctured such as castor, asafoedita, catnip leaves as examples with vodka, everclear or propylene glycol. The odor is extracted out of the product by the alcolhol or glycol and then the strong smelling liquid is used in lure formulation. When tincturing I personally use 100 proof vodka, cover the product with plenty of vodka and place the bottle in a place where I can give it a good shaking everytime I pass for a couple of months or so. The longer the tincture sits, the more odor it will extract from the product. I do this with weasel musks, drop the musk pods into the alcolhol and shake many times over a few months. This stretches out a the weasel musk which is generally in limited supply. Ace

I use Aristocrat 100 Proof Vodka. Here it runs about $15.90 for a half gallon.

I believe I gave you a tip regarding purchaseing it legally. It is also illegal in Pa as well. But with a permit you can acquire all you desire for your work as do I. It is a very good product for this purpose. It is not as economical but does a better extraction in a shorter period of time due to the alcohol content and when mixed with another medium it is superb.

I also use Everclear on some things, but I use 100 proof vodka on more than I do with Everclear. Everclear is legal to buy here and it runs around $31.90 a half gallon.

When tincturing some materials, the Everclear tends to have more odor than I like, and the vodka seems to have less. On some materials, the Everclear does a better job though and odor isn't much of a problem.

I don't allow the alcohol to evaporate. I seal it until ready for use.

We used to have big trash can parties in Michigan when I live there and we seemed to always have plenty of everclear. That was years like the early 80s must have made it illegal after that.

Is there a basic ratio of alcohol to product (castors for instance) that is being covered/tinctured?

It depends on if you want a strong tincture or a weaker one. Some just cover the material, others use 50/50 and so on. Maybe Bob, Asa, Paul, or someone has a better answer. It's way to late for me to be on here let alone give any advice.

There is something else that is put with the tincture that mellows the alcohol odor and holds the tinctured material in a formula so the alcohol at that point doesnt matter as it will disipate. I am not saying what it is.:)But it makes a world of difference in holding its strength. If I get time I will post some tincture material pictures to show the difference in color and strength of a tincture. The color tells the story in most cases.

I do agree Everclear is more bold in odor initally on first smelling the mix but it does draw and pull what needs extracted.

Possum are you drinking that apple pie tincture. LOL

LOL Bob, I also have another agent I use in conjunction with alcohol during tincturing. I thought I was the only one who knew about it. I'm using the other material more and more because I like the way it works. The first letter in the agent I use is D. Do you think this may be what you're using too Bob?

Yeah it is Bob. I like mixing the D stuff with alcohol on some things. It does a nice job. With some material I found it works great straight, yet with some material, the mix with alcohol does a nicer job.

I'd rather they talk in code than PMs. This way, we have a clue of what they're up to, and a chance to get it figured.
