I picked up a hand swager at Lowes for $25. NOthing fancy but looked like it will do the job. I've seen em for much more, but what's the difference?

I thought for $25, I couldn't go wrong. I've got some supplies coming from Newt to make cable stakes and snares so I'll give it a try and see.
I've seen where some just whack em' with a hammer, maby I'll end up doing that, but I'm one of those guys that likes the right tool for the job.

I bought one last year, and it has worked fine for me. Used it to make cable stakes, and had no problems.

Yes they work great, just a bit cumbersome. I use to put one jaw of it in the vise to crimp stops. It was alright for a while but if you are going to do big numbers, go to the bench mount.

I looked at them. They appeared to be very cumbersome to opperate. You'd have to open them as wide as possible to get the ferrels in there, be hard to hold them open wide and hold the cable/ferral in place at the same time... I decided to save my $27 and put towards a good one someday when I decide to manufacture snares for sale, until that time, since they don't need to be pretty for my personal use, I'll stick to a hammer the ferrals and stops hold just as well.

Didn't someone have a pic of this model welded to their bench, where it worked one handed?

I've got one and I put in my vise and operate it one handed. It's not hard to do at all. Well worth the $100+ saved on a bench mounted one.

As long as your crimping Alum it will last a lifetime.

Agree got one love it. Best tool for building snares. Dont like to use the hammer if you dont hit it at the right spot you end up damaging the cable. Next time you check your snare site broken snare. Dont happen all the time but this made me change to the hand swager.

In my opinion a hammer is the right tool for that job, but I'm a steel nut user also.

Used it this afternoon. A little cumbersome... but works like a charm. For $25, I'm happy.

I do see a little welding job in the future to make a jig like Possum. Nice work.

Update: Just place one handle in a jaw of your bench vise.........NOW WE'RE TALKING!!!!!! Works great and by placing in the vise it's at a good working height. Made a hundred snares and this thing is PRICELESS.

Well worth the $25.
