I just use a torch to heat up the spring eye then bend the eye straight (or open it enough to pass the jaws through)in a bench vise. Just the opposite for instalation.

You do have to bend them open, but I
never use heat. Just a big ol pair of
channel locks.

I have never done it, and therefore this is hearsay so take it for what it is worth, but I read once that you bend the end of the eye up, not try to open up.

If the springs avery weak it may be better to buy new traps. But if you have a damadged or broken spring the easiest way is with a large vise.First lock the spring in the closed position with the safety.

Next you have to position the sping through the jaws. This is a little tricky but after you have done it once its pretty simple.

Sorry about the messed posts I will try to get this one better. Put the lower part of the spring loop into the vise and lock it tight. Next you simply pry the end of the spring to close the loop to form a tight circle with no opening for the jaws to pop out of.

With everything line up it should now look like the photo. You now repeat for the other loop and you are done. A word of caution you need a solid vise for large traps to be sure everything is secure and nothing will fly out to hurt you

Only apply heat to a spring when you are going to throw the spring into the junk pile.

Clamp the trap in a bench vise and bend the spring eyes with a large adjustable pliers is the best way to put new springs on an old trap.
