I have both but love the mags. The difference is the bend in the jaws so they make a complete inclosure. When I buy more it will be duke 330 mags.

I would definetly go with magnums. One extra beaver held with the full closure jaws will more than cover the extra cost. Ever once in a while I accidentaly catch one by the foot or tail in one. Without the bent jaws of the magnum style, you would never hold them.

I don't get the advantage of the mags (other than an incidental foot catch, which I don't want anyhow). With anything larger than a tiny muskrat, the trap isn't going to close all the way anyhow. AND, I would rather a bit of a gap in between the jaws for WHEN I get my fingers in there because we all know sooner or later its going to happen.

A trap kills either by the striking force or the clamping force of the trap. The magnums will strike with a greater force and will often kill the animal instantly where as the regulars do not deliver the same striking force and after being knocked unconscious may regain consciousness. The clamping force must be strong enough that the animal, if not dead, never regains consciousness.
It is easy enough to come along and see the animal lying dead and you don't see much movement so you say the trap is effective. Try watching a beaver get caught some time and see if it moves after the trap strikes it.
So, hopefully you have a little more info to use, I hope you choose the magnums.

Savageau makes a 10 X 12 trap
Magnums are the trap of the future. Anyone buying new traps should go that way. Boy are some people slow to change.

I have seen duke 110 magnums in catalogs. Do they have the magnum jaws, or just extra strong springs.

A 330 is a 330. ALL will do the job if the triggers are tuned and the springs are strong. But..IMO the ultimates are the Belisles. They PANCAKE the beaver. If you have never used one...you just can't appreciate what I'm saying..LOL. If you use them...you know what I'm talking about.
Their spring safety hooks are the best system out there.

TastelikeChicken is right on with Belisles they are the best trap built. Yesterday we picked up seven fisher and a marten on the last day of the season and these traps do some serious killing they barely got out of the box. A word of caution don't get your fingers caught in a Belisle beaver trap without your trap plyers handy, it will bring a tear to your eye, can still feel the pain.

Ran Duke 330's and Belisle's side by side on the beaver line a few weeks ago, and there is no comparison. If you have the $ the Belisles are the way to go. No struggle, just dead!

Does anyone know how to modify older traps to have a kill bar or modify the jaws to close more tightly? I took some old traps with weaker springs and cut the killing bars off. Then I welded them on the inside of two other sets. Now I have two really strong traps with the striker bars. I left mine with about a 3/8 inch gap just in case I get careless some day.

Keep in mind that fimgers , hands and arms caught in magnums don't come out as easily as they do in a regular trap. If you trap by yourself you need to take this into consideration.

I know a fella that was trapping bank beaver with some 330s He set the trap under water and reached down to place some guide sticks. Somehow he bumped the trigger and it "bit" him around the forearm.. You can't take a 330 off with one hand. He had to walk back to his truck and drive to a local conveince store and have a couple fellas there get him outta the trap. He'll get picked on about that till the day he dies.. LOL

Any #330's I buy now are Belisle's. I still have some of everything from over the years, but I sure like those Belisle's, except the price!

I agree with you here, and for that reason, I use safety setters on all 330's Magnum or otherwise.

Yes...ALWAYS use a safety clip ....plus the factory spring safetys on any 330. I'm a 330 club member ( also a #4 and #5 DLS member...LOL) and learned the safety clip lesson the hard way!!!
Don't take the safety clip off until you are completely done. I got the 330 across one wrist. I hung it in the ice cold water until it went numb and kept wading most of the day with it underwater. Lots of pretty green, blue and purple colors and that wrist took about 2 months to get back to normal.
M Howard...what brand stabilizers are you running? I have the MTP ones, both short H and Long H and they fit Belisles. Also use the KB stabilizers and they fit.
