Just got a new welder the other week. This was my first project. I still need to anchor the jack to the rig though.

It's not perfect and a see a few mods I am going to make but it works great. I use 1/4" cold roll for the base plate, just have to remember to put 2 links of chain on it before I weld them on.

That looks like it would work better than my 5" vise.

I have seen the guts blown out of pretty good vices making bases out of 1" flat stock. Good idea.

Ya copy cat... \:D \:D lol you'll NEED to reinforce the top piece..way to light to last long.. mine is made out of as HEAVY of tool steel that I could get...50ton jack..doubles as my swivel maker and tag stamper..The bottom is 1/2" plate..top is square hollow tool steel..mine weight probably DOUBLE what your does...bit of a "drawback" lol This unit will do round or flat stock w/out even breaking a sweat.

Looks Good & Should work OK.

There are usually a few "bugs" to get worked out of any pilot project, so don't feel bad about that....

You're doing just fine, keep it up.......

Lynx, The top is only 3/16" but I welded a piece of U-channel (1/8" thick 1" x 1") the base is only 1/4" so I added 3 pieces of 3/16# so that it looks like an E. Mine also only has a 2 ton jack but it seems to be plenty. Might went more if I was bending flat stock.

You think you would need more than 4000 lbs to bend a 1/4 round rod of cold rolled? Any thing above that seems like over kill IMHO.

Same way I made mine using a 12 ton bottle jack, thinking about going to a 20 ton so I can bend more than a couple at a time.

yep, I have a large Wilton that will do it but I still dont like using a vise if I dont have to. My frame for a bottle jack is just basically a four cornered frame. The jack sets in it then the jig. That way I can take my jig jaws in and out.

I have only made cold roll base plates but I don't see why it wouldn't.
