For those that use jaw laminations,do you buy them prebent or make your own? Do you use round or square stock and what is the best way to form them?

i use rd. and for the rd. jaws i just open my vice about 2" or so tap and move the rod at the same time. it takes some work but once ya get it down you can make lam. for any trap ya want. just make sure you get them bent straight.

I just went to the scrap yard yesterday and dug through a scrap bin to find 2 16' lengths of 3/16" x 1/2" flat stock steel. Both had one rolled edge too. Perfect.
I cut them to 3.5" lengths and bent them in a vise with the aid of a large adjustable wrench. I don't own a welder or know how to use one, so I C-clamped the lamination top dead center on the trap jaw, drilled a hole in each end of the lamination, and fastened it with an 8-32 machine screw and nut. Then I ground down the nuts seal the threads and pretty them up.
Makes for a beafy little #1.5 Bridger.

I replaced all the square jaws on my #2 victors with 1.75 jaws. All the old jaws I cut and shaped to be be use as jaw laminations. They worked great. Here is a pictue of what they turned out like.

If you want to do it that way get a piece of 3"-4" diameter pipe.Clamp your pieces on the end of the pipe with a vice grip, then use a hammer and pound it down against the pipe until there curved,it won't be exact to the trap jaw but it'll be easy to camp it on the jaw and clamp it to fit, then weld.

The beater end of an avvil works wonders. A planetary ring roller is the best Ive seen for the job though. They dont cost much either.

There are even better things than a ring roller, but just to do a doz traps or so it isn't cost effective.

Oh yea, the piranha iron worker I used with a die does one in about half a second but I aint got 35K to drop on one,lol..I was thinking in reg joe terms. That iron worker would pinch off 1" coldroll like a twig, boy it was a sweet machine.

Instead of forming one at a time on the pipe , I cut a notch the size of the rod and wrapped a continuous coil, then cut to length desired.

Cletis, I think I will try your method, did you have to heat the rod much? If I measured right a 4" OD pipe should be about right for a Duke 1.5.

longgear, did you weld those in with the trap jaws open or closed, and did you use vise grips to hold in place, my welding is not the best even with a wire feed machine in close area's.

I like those longear, I think I am going to try that. Is that #9 wire? That should really stop them from chewing.

They are cut off 20 penny nails I weld in with the jaws closed hold with vise grips. make sure there is enough room between chew guard and pan/dog. I'm not the best welder either Later Longear

The flat ones I made I hand formed over a metal pipe. I only did enough to give me an arch. It did not need to be exact as I used 3 vise grips to hold it in place. That was enough to make them form exactly like the jaw. Then I just placed 3 welds on each lam and I was good to go.

What ever method or material you use, make sure there is CLEARANCE for the added material before welding them in solid.

Not all traps are built with the same clearance inside or outside.

TexA, yes I have to check that out . I don't think th 3/16" rod is too much of a issue, but have a bunch of 1/4" square stock that might be a issue. I find with a good lam. on a coil spring trap, seems to make coons chew less. Used 1.75 SC with lams last year, 6 land coons no problems.

I clamp them in place with two vice grips, weld the center, then the outer end. The 1/2" sticking out on the end I grab it with a 10" pliers to bend it down to the corner of the jaw while white to red hot from welding next to the corner. If it cools to much to bend you can warm the rod up again with the stck welder.T.20
