it takes more technique than muscle. take one inside the house, set down and watch tv. once you get comfortable, set the trap, and keep doing it until you get tired of it. then the next day you will be able to set one like you have been doing it your whole life.

grab the trap with both hands and put the base on your left knee. Depress the right spring step over the spring and put it under your right knee. depress the left spring and set the trap with your rignt hand. With practice you can set the traps in just a few seconds. I use this for #5's and #44 B&L's

Just a word about stepping on longsprings to set them. If you step to far on the outside of the spring (near the bend) it is possible to flatten the bend so that the spring does not have full power. This is why some longsprings need to be tweaked by sliding a peice of pipe into the bend tapping the bend open with a hammer to return them to full power. Using proper setting techniques will avoid this.

bhlbamma, what part of bama are you from. The Heart of Dixie is my home state (my handle comes from the river I grew up on). I am seeing more and more trappers from home showing up here. Glad to see that trapping is not dying out in spite of the fact that our southern fur may not be as worth as much as yankee fur.

once yoiu have the springs depressed and the jaws open it is pretty easy to keep the jaws open, at least with number #2's lol.ive never tried anything bigger than that. i enjoy setting longsprings, it is a lot of fun for some reason. especially if there is some big guy thats trying to set it with his feet, and cant. then, u grab the trap and set it way easier with ur hands. it makes u look cool!lol

Always make sure your dog is out. I Like mine on the bottom, I do both springs at the same time over my knee and bind the right spring leaving my right hand free to flip the dog over the jaw and hold. Always come from under the jaw to set the pan and dog. If the trap goes off it catches nothing.

Like anything, the more you try it the easier it will get. I made a pair of setters for my #5 double longspring traps a few years ago. I only used them the first little while. After a catch I was pumped up enough to set them by hand. At the beginning of season I was really struggling with setting them, but now it is as easy as pie. Got to build muscle memory.
