I own 3 montanas that are dogless. I dont know any other companies that make them but I am new to trapping so they could for sure be some. Less parts in the only advantage I know of. try you some out

Disadvantage would be if you wanted a super light trigger. Hard to adjust one light enough for weasel or even mink. Big advantage is that pan tension is usually the same after a carch as before the catch. No wasting time adjusting trap on the line. Big advantage of the Montana #3 is that what gets in it stays in it.

I have some montgomery 1.5 I really like the design easy to bed covering the pan don't have to worry about the dog getting stuck under the pan cover, good on getting fingers, but my pans don't have tension adjustment, other than that really like them.

I used them for k-9s this year (montana's) and I loved them. I am going totally to dogless next year. I also have some 1.5 monty's for coon I did not like. But anyway I believe the advantage, just like stated before, no dog to break, adjust, fall off, etc. just set and go, pan tension always the same. I will state this I had BAD luck with wire screen. I believe that was operator error though. GOOD LUCK

i have owned five of them for about four days....they are paid for: one nice female bobcat and a big ole rank dog this morning... both high catches anchored solid, goin' nowhere.

There is still more dogless traps out there, like the MB-650's they dont have a dog on them either, just to name one.

I like them cause I never worry about the dog fipping the foot out of the trap, its just something I have always thought of, but there is tons of high catches with dog style traps, to me its just personal choices.

You will either love em or hate em as drifter says. It took alot of getting used to for me knowing if it was safe to let go. Best thing i like abotu em is the very little to no pan travel and the low profile. Bad thing is when bedding the trap DO NOT push down on the fixed jaw it will fire the trap have found this out the hardway...LMAO I have both montgomeries and montanas. I prefer them over the bridger #3 4 coiled i have.

There is a "notch' in the end of the pan - sort of like where you would normally set the dog. But instead the edge of the jaw sits in that notch. So the pan sets right on the jaw.

As Cattrax says - no flying dog to get in the way when the trap goes off.

I will see if I have any more pictures. I know I don't have one showing the trap set. Hopefully some one else can help out here.

Here you go, this is a montogmery trap, notice the part the holds the jaw down, there is not a dog that comes clear over the jaw. Hope this helps

I agree 100%, love 'em! Some trappers maintain that rising dogs can't sometimes flip an animals foot upward causing toe catches and complete misses but I disagree. I have been using some dogless traps since I was introduced to them by Morse Oberto in 1962. Oberto explained the dogless design made a good high hold on animals paws when they stepped anywhere inside of the jaws. It didn't take me long using them to realize the difference, one day it dawned on me that I hadn't had one poor foot or toe hold on a coyote or bobcat with the dogless traps. That is one reason the MB 650-C is my choice of modern traps today. Ace

Ace I agree 100% I like them MB-650's probably the best, nothing wrong with them Montanas either but I really like the 650's, and when I can I probably will switch everything over to them, but I learned on the montgomery's so its hard to let them go.

Lone wolf that was some I bought and I will be fixing the laminations up on them real soon, thats one reason I had them around to take pictures of.

likes been allready said, once adjusted, its hard for them to come out of adjustment. cacth very many coyotes when the grounds froze, or very dry, and you will be spending alot of time straiteng dogs they bend up.

As far as pan tension on a dogless a little file work and you can lighten them up or increse the pan tension. And it does'nt take much (found out the hard way).

I've got a few old #2 Montgomery dogless square jaw traps. Looks alot like the #3 Montana. Wish someone would make them again.
